shifting issue into 2nd gear
my 90 Si AWS, grinds into second at higher revs, I just got the car from a friend and have serviced the trans w/ Honda MTF about 350-400 miles ago, it is better but still rough shifting into second above 3500-4000 RPM.
Any Ideas to get around possible syncro work?
thanks, new to the group.

You usually don't get much dirt or sludge in manual tranny fluid so I wouldn't worry about it myself. I recently drained my MT fluid (engine oil) after ~4 years of use without being changed and it looked like new oil!
Another culprit could be your clutch system. If something is causing the pressure plate not release fully when you press the clutch pedal that could cause some grinding...

166K on the vehicle but when I serviced the trans it was horrible, black, smelled like burnt 90 weight, and was super thick. I don't think clutch because all the other gears shift great.

Yes, to third that notion, definitely get rid of the ATF and get some Honda MTF or some Syncromesh in there. I lean towards Honda fluid unless it is absolutely necessary to try syncromesh, some have told stories of losing more gears after using syncromesh.
Anyways, you need to stop the grinding now until you find a solution or the metal shavings will start ruining everything else in there.
See if you can get a magnetic drain plug to put in when you change the oil, passwordjdm.com sells some I have used, and they get the job done well. You can also double-clutch to shift into that gear to slow down the shafts some and stop the grind until you fix it.

Re: shifting issue into 2nd gear (Bretster1)
Just to verify... When I got the car the trans fluid was black, stinky, and super thick.
I then serviced it with Honda MTF, and it got better, but not great.
Another person had advised running ATF for a few hundred miled just because of all the detergents in it to clean up the bearings and moving parts, then go back to Honda MTF. ( I have not done this, I was just checking with the group about it. )
So it looks like I will service it again w/ SyncroMesh. Is it the actual fluid or an additive?
I would guess I can get this Penzoil Syncromesh at any parts store??? correct?
thanks again
