Painted my valve cover

Thought id share my progress on it...

Tools needed:
-10mm socket w/ ratchet
-Fathead screwdriver(to pry the cover off)
-Can of VHT Wrinkle plus(Your fav. color)
-Some sandpaper(or paint stripper)
-Oven, Or heat gun
-Couple beers maybe if your into that.

I only lightly sanded my factory paint just cause its wrinkle and it doesnt need to come out smooth anyways...

Sprayed a coat on in one direction, 2nd coat in the opposite direction, 3rd coat in a horizontal direction...

Put in the oven(make sure gaskets are all off) let it bake for about 15 - 20 mins or so... you will see it wrinkle...
**Make sure all oil is cleaned off the underside of the valve cover, Can catch fire in the oven, Aswell as stink even worse**

take it out, you can leave the letters but i find its more sharp looking without the letters painted...

Install back on the car...

And you have a nice type r looking valve cover that cost you 15 bucks.

3 coats (as the can of wrinkle plus says)

Baked on 200 for 15 - 20 mins
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...riftaz/2-1.jpg

After the baking was done... Nicely wrinkled
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...riftaz/3-1.jpg

Shaved the letters... Completely done at this point...

Doen and back on the car...

I could only special order it through Oreily and I have to give them the VHT code since its not even in their system.

I would also recommend a couple heat lamps for tighter wrinkles right after spray for 20mins and quickly put it in oven. Ive done 3. Makes a huge difference. You just have to make sure its not watery or the paint boils and bubbles. You need perfect timing.

I forgot to mention. More chances of peeling without taking off old paint. Even though its a pita, its worth it. I use the legit aircraft paint remover. Wear gloves!!!

The directions on how to apply the paint are right on the can. Removing the paint already on the valve cover will basically require you to read the can of paint stripper. I found them for $5 at a local Walmart. I have been using the same type of stripper for the past 3 years or so. Works great!

Re: Painted my valve cover

Looks good, but i dont like the smooth look of paint on a valve cover, i love the factory-ish kind of look, to me the smooth gloss finish looks half assed.. but everyone has their own opinions right? but i found the can of paint at canadian tire. and i didnt strip the old paint purely because i didnt wanna buy paint stripper to only use on that. and didnt want to sand it by hand, so i just sanded it to trough it up, and so far its holding up great.

Also no i didnt use a new valve cover gasket, mine was in good shape, and didnt leak before hand, so i didnt replace it. and it is still holding up now...

Nobody uses tape to cover the oil cap or spark plug holes eh? i thought it would just be easier to do that then scrape it out, i dont want paint chips falling in my oil lol...

Also, if you cant take your own valve cover off, i highly suggest getting someone else to do this for you...

I used black VHT on my 96 civic si... it came just bare metal so i thought it would look alot better. i think it freshened up the engine bay alot more...

Re: Painted my valve cover

Did an h23 vc a while back without heating it up and it got some cool patterns in it by curing naturally. Some parts were smooth and others were semi wrinkled. Also played with spraying other colors over cured wrinkle with less luck. Dont have any pics unfortunately, already stripped it for the next trial painting.

I like the write up w pics!!! The wrinkle is cool but the colors are so limited! You vtec luders are lucky. I'm still h23 non vtec.

Here's what I'm working with
