the OFFCIAL TURBO Prelude thread!!!

ok, after seeing topic after topic of the same stuff, i figured it might just be a good idea to start a thread here that is specifically for Turbo Prelude questions.

i am hoping for good response's from anyone that knows anything about turbo Prelude engine, specifcally the H22, and H23.

so...... ask away.

EDIT: i am NOT trying to say i know it all, i still have a lot of turbo questions myself, but i am hoping that with everyone else that knows about them, we could have a kick ass "collective intelligence"

how much can i boost with stock internals?

Ok, as far I know the h22a series engine is not a good engine for turbo application, the GSR is better. I believe this thought is based on the pistons in the H22A, and there weakness?

IMO, H22 pistons are pretty strong, i ran a 100 shot of nitrous on stock internals for a while, and it ran great. when i removed the pistons after blowing the engine, they were all in almost new shape, other than the carbon build-up. the valves are the biggest weaknesses of the H22 i think.

i have only heard a few stories about people being able to boost over 8 psi on stock H-series internals. the ringlands can't take the pressure, and even if you put in forged pistons it has to be re-sleeved (at least on the H22A4), due to the material the sleeves are made of.

Ok, i gotta question for the boost guru's.. I am planning on running a garret t3/t4e but have yet to decide on a manifold... can anyone suggest a manifold that is a/c compatible as well as give me enough clearance from the block to mount the turbo.. (i live in miami and therefore losing a/c is not an option)

Firedrake says that the ones from SFP for the H-series suck, i don't know if he ever got his to work or not.

I have heard the same thing about the SFP manifolds.. i was considering them because they are local and we used an sfp manifold on a b16 we built.. but i have heard that their h series manifold sucks.. i am probably going to go with the maxrev manifold and downpipe.. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif havent heard any complaints as of now..

f-max has a nice manifold, and i am pretty sure you can buy just the manifold from dealers, there is one around Orlando, it's called Racing Works, you could give them a call

http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif I am going to have to look into fmax as well... i kinda like the maxrev so far.. but i havent really looked into Fmax yet.. gonna check them out first before making my decision.. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif

The H series manifolds from SFP will work fine if you're using a smaller compressor housing (like a T04b.....dunno who would run a T04b on a prelude motor though http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emhammer.gif ) but with a T04e you need to lose one of your motor mount bolts and trim the heck out of the block, which in my eyes is unacceptable......I'm in turbo limbo right now, because I was planning to upgrade to a GT3240, but now I don't know what I'm going to do.....our shop got a lot of work all the sudden, so the prelude turbo project is just kinda waiting.......
Anyways, don't get the SFP manifolds for the H series, there are better manifolds available, especially for what they charge.....their B and D series manifolds are great though! I'm going to be sending the 2 H series ones we got back to them to be redone with the flanges at a different angle and cleaner welds (the welds on my manifolds are AWFUL!)

P.S. Apexii, did you ever end up getting one of the VRS exhausts from paul? I ordered mine and it's been over a month and still no exhaust, just curious......

No, I didn't get one. Paul sold out again, i'm sick of friggen emailing and IM'ing him about it. I may just do it myself, but my first priority is getting the motor assembled 100%. Have you heard anything from him?

Any graphic artists reading this?? http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emwink.gif

Only response I've gotten from Paul so far was "you should be getting it soon, I will try to get you a tracking number ASAP" and that was on Monday......owell, not like I can use it until I'm ready to install the turbo stuff anyways.....a 3 inch N/A exhaust would probably be even more obnoxious than my 2.25 inch I'm running right now http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emwink.gif

trade u gude for my t3/t4 b

ITS NOT THE H22/H23 PISTONS THAT ARE WEAK. its the ring landings..
for the most part 7 psi is fine on stock bottom end. ive seen a few h23s that are properly tuned runnin 11psi daily. but i really wouldnt reccomend it... say with 7ish. make sure u have enough fuel...and your timing isnt advanced much if at all.

ok, just thought i'd throw out this comment... after hour of using the cutting torch, and the Dremel tool (talk about complete opposites), i have my everything to mount my GReddy type 24 FMIC. the IC itself is semi attached to the crash bar already, but not with any bolts yet. as opposed to what most people with a type 24 do, i modified my crashbar rather than removing it. i hacked a lot of it off, but now i am going to start making measurements and weld some reinforcements to it with the use of some roll bar tubing. i just thought i'd throw that out for you guys, i'll post some pics up tomorrow when i get to work.

dude you gotta post some pics when you are done.. i think i am going to run into the same issues with the crash bar when i install my spearco... http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: the OFFCIAL TURBO Prelude thread!!! (LordVtec)

some of the torched spots look kinda mangled right now, but i haven't had the chance to hit em with w/ a grinder yet, but i'll give you some pics tomorrw anyways

BTW, if my body kit wasn't bigger than my OEM bumper, this most likely wouldn't have worked

LordVtec 10-25-2002 09:29 PM

Re: the OFFCIAL TURBO Prelude thread!!! (Boosted97Lude)

so then i might have to look into changing my OEM bumper huh?

Re: the OFFCIAL TURBO Prelude thread!!! (LordVtec)

well, i'm not sure about that, the type 24 i've got is like skyline gt-r sized, i mean, that thing is HUGE. i don't think the spearcos are as big, but i could be wrong. i've got a spearco sitting in my shop that's off my buddies civic, and mine is almost twice as big

LordVtec 10-25-2002 09:41 PM

Re: the OFFCIAL TURBO Prelude thread!!! (Boosted97Lude)

i have a spearco, 29 inches long, 3 inches thick, and 7.5 inches tall.. gonna post a pic.. gimmie a sec

what do ya think?

Firedrake 10-25-2002 10:26 PM

Re: the OFFCIAL TURBO Prelude thread!!! (LordVtec)

Looks a lot like mine, I'll try and post some pix tomorrow while I'm swapping my EGT gauges.....mine is a 24x3.5x8 spearco core and another 2 inches or so on each end for the endtanks......I haven't even started doing fitment yet, but it should fill in the bigmouth bumper pretty well......how hard is that front impact support to cut? I have to keep it, because my bumper will sag under it's own weight without the support.....

dunno who would run a T04b on a prelude motor though http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emhammer.gif )
I am actually completely happy with my t3/t04b at least up to 10 psi. We'll see what happens when I push it to its limits, but it is supposed to be capable of 450 hp. I like not having very much lag and since this is still a street car, 350-400whp is more than I need.

alrighy, my FMIC is 11" tall, by 30" wide (endtank to endtank), by 3" think

yeah, like i said, the torched areas are kind rough, i should got my dad to to it, he's like 50 times better at it than i am, but i'll take to it with a grinder and clean that up.
