Odd Low RPM Startup Problem....H22a
My h22 lude, probably about 1/20 times I start her up, does this odd routine....
It turns over fine, but then starts, idles very very low, like under 500rpm, and the oil pressure light flickers on and off dimly. Oil level has nothing to do with this, I made sure of that. For a while it would even start and immediately die, wait a few minutes, crank it, and it starts up normal.
To get it outta this state, all I do is rev it up a little bit and just go ahead and take off, and by the time I come to an idle again, its gone....
Any ideas??
thanks boys
edit: no CELs ever, except an intermittent primary o2 sensor code, i know it needs to be replaced, could that be the cause??
The motor makes good compression numbers also, all were 190 +- 5% if i remember right, possibly a bit higher....

if it only happens during cold start, you can eliminate the primary o2 being the reason that the ecu runs open loop until the o2 sensor is heated.
have you tested the oil pressure?
almost sounds distributor related.

Its not only the cold start, it does it completely randomly
No I haven't tested the oil pressure but that is the ONLY time that light comes on.
I honestly doubt its the dizzy, I have been through so many (unfortunately) that this has happened with about 3 different dizzies at this point....

When's the last time u changed ur oil? Unlikely but it could be partially clogged. Also, some h22a's get their oil pickup line damaged when sitting on a crate for a long time, hopefully that's not the case, doesn't sound like it. Easy way to check is to just see if ur oil pan has a big dent in it. Main thing I would do is get the oil pressure checked though.

Did u think it was your main relay? I mean thats the same 'ish that happens to my car, cept no oil light comming on.
The last time i talked to you about my car it started, iddled low for a sec, then died. WHen yours dies can you just keep cranking and it'll start or do you have to wait?
Or posisbly your oil pump could be seizing up....just another random idea.

have you thought of possibly having a short somewhere in the harness?
this could possibly be throwing a false oil pressure light......

my engine does the same thing almost...if its cold and i start it up...the idle jumps up and down, almost dieing but never actually does...its fine after the car warms up. my cam timing is off and im fixing that right now...im thinking this could be a good start for fixing my problem at least.

Re: Odd Low RPM Startup Problem....H22a (bb4ever)
Mine will do that every 1/25 startups or so, and it has to go away itself. If I rev it up it just boggs out, but if I wait a bit it will go away. I have replaced the main relay and ignition switch, so I would guess ignitor maybe?...

the ignitor is what i was thinking, but he says he has been through now 3 distributors.

Re: Odd Low RPM Startup Problem....H22a (bb4ever)
My car since going to OBD1 will do the same thing during some (but certainly not all) hot starts, especially in cold weather. Back when my idle screw was at the factory setting the engine would die, now it will tick along at a very low RPM. Problems are gone after driving 50 feet.
But I've never seen an oil light come on. That's a little worrying.

im using hondata on a p72, so i dont think its an ecu specific problem....p13s do this also
i also dont think its the main relay because its not like the car doesn't get spark and fuel it just doesn't idle right
honestly i think A Bude Lude is on the right track, my intake manifold/throttle body setup could be the culprit....the screw is who knows where, its an old 70mm str throttle body and getting the car to run ok with it was a challenge....i did get it to work but i still think maybe the iacv isnt getting what it needs....geez who knows...
anthony is your intake manifold and throttle body stock??

Re: (AnthonyG2003)
My b66 also has a problem simliar to OP's. Since I have only owned the car for less than a year, it has only happened when the motor is fully warmed up. Weird? yes. I have to hold the key for a good few seconds and it turns over about 5 times until it starts up and then it still has a very low idle for a few seconds and then everything is normal. (Oil light flickers during this also) It happens here and there (1/20 or so). Do you guys think it's my starter or something?
I used to throw the rich/lean CEL every week but since i've changed the fuel filter out 2 weeks ago..it hasn't happened

hrm well how clean is it all?? im trying to figure out if this has anything to do with electronic idle control....
i know it has nothing to do with the FITV....my throttle body doesn't have one....
