MAJOR oil leak
hi,
I have 1995 civic with an h22a swap. The motor is bone stock and im running turbo. I started noticing little drops of oil on my parking. I jacked up the car at a friend's house and my motor is full of oil. Timing belt side is either coming from the cam seals or the valve cover gasket. I also have oil all over my tranny and it comes either from the cam seal or vtec solenoid. We did take off the timing belt cover and the leak is not from the crank seal or balancer seal.
Tonight, I'll change the following:
1-distributor o-ring
2-vtec solenoid
3-cam seal (behind the vtec solenoid)
has for the other leak, I was wondering how I can change both cam seals without taking out the camshafts. When all of this is done ( i give myself 2-3 days) A brand new valve cover gasket willl go on. Any one have a write and some tips to make sure its doesnt leak again?
sorry for my poor english

Re: MAJOR oil leak
i just had the same sorta leak, it was the cam oil seals near the cam gears. oil was leaking out at a pretty constant rate and i would loke 1 quart of oil every 15 miles and a puddle would be under the car after i shut the car off and come back to it later on that day on the driver's side.
if this is the same leak make sure you get honda seals to replace them, i made the mistake of getting autozone seals and it still leaked, honda seals will seal much better. if it is the cam gear side seals then but the car at TDC, loosen the cam gear bolts, then take the timing belt off, remove the cam gears, replace both seals while you are in there, no need to remove the camshafts, the press in the new seals, put the cam gears back on but don't torque yet, then put the timing belt on, then torque the cam gear bolts (make sure not to forget this part)
then let it dry for at least 1 hr and check for leaks

Re: MAJOR oil leak
are you saying that i dont need to remove the tensionner and all the lower pieces? Last time i took everything apart and put new seal all around and belts.
If it eays has you say and i dont need to take off the lower plastic with the tensionner...i might do it 2night
any other inputs?

Re: MAJOR oil leak
well i have the cam seals (three of them) vtec soleinoid seal, distributor oring and valve cover seal.
just wondering if i can the seal at the cam gear with taking out the tensionner and just popping the timing belt off. (like oranginal said)

Re: MAJOR oil leak
yes you can replace the cam oil seals at the cam gear without taking off the tensioner and with leaving the lower timing cover on. however to replace the cam seal, which is on the passenger side of the intake cam, you will have to remove the cover that holda the cams in and remove the cam cap on that side. so you will need some hondabond and a torque wrench if you want to take on that project.

Re: MAJOR oil leak
if fine with the cam seal on behind the vtec solenoid. I was just worry about both seal on the cam gear side. so basicaly
1-remove valve cover
2-remove upper timing belt cover
3-remove cam gear with the timing belt on them (or how you do it?)
4-pry out the old seal
5-clean and put a lil bit if rtv and put back cam seal and then cam gear
is this any good. Im just questionned about the timing belt

Re: MAJOR oil leak
1- Set TDC
2-remove valve cover
you will have to take off the wire going to the alternator as well to get the valve cover off
3-remove upper timing belt cover
4-put the car in gear and loosen the cam gear bolts
5- take the timing belt off
6 - now you can take the cam gear bolts out
7- pull off the cam gears (don't loose or drop the cam keys)
8-pry out the old seal with a flathead screwdriver
9-clean and put a lil bit if rtv ultra gray or black around the outside edges and pres sin the cam seal
10-put the gears back on with the cam keys and put the cam bolt in, tighten the cam bolts but do not put a final torque on them until the timing belt is on
11-confirm the cam gears are pointing at TDC and put the timing belt back on
12- !important - now you will be able to put a final torque on the cam gears, i think honda says 35lbs but don't quote me on that.
13-then put the valve cover back on with some hondabond around the edges where the curves are for the cam gears and let it dry for approx 1 hr.
note: the cam seal will press in enough to sit flush with the head, when i bought some autozone seals they pressed in too much but the honda seals will fit snug. also you don't "need" any hondabond around them but some people use it and some don't.

Re: MAJOR oil leak
all done,
wasnt has easy has you said because the timing belt was tight. We had to almost remove the camshafts but everything went fine. Now i have to fix the drain from the turbo.
When i removed my valve cover, I saw to much sludge in there. Do you guys know how to remove it? No seamfoam plz, turbo and seafoam dont go well together. I was thinking of just buying a engine flush and drive for 100-200 miles and then do the oil change. After, i would do the oil change every 1200 miles.
what you think?
