How much is a good price to knife edge a crank?

I highly recommend you don't have your crank knife-edged.

why is that? would it weaken it too much? |
Re: (Twiggz)
whast this do exactly
|
Re: (es_squared)
takes mass off your crank or cams, weakens it alot.. but makes smoother flow or w.e...
id say if you drive hard and u knife edge ur taking 1/4 of its life off or more. If you had the parts out n just labor/machine shop cost i cant imagine it costing over 250.... |
Re: (es_squared)
remove weight so there's less rotational mass, freeing more power up. It's not a typical common mod.
|
what about balancing it, good?
|
Re: (H22CL)
balancing is very important

Re: How much to Knife edge a crank (BoostedH23Accord)
now when you guys balanced everything was that done with the flywheel attached? I would consider this to be much more balanced.

this mod is not for the average person, you need to talk to a good company that mods them and make sure they know your intentions for the car so it can be modified to your specific application. You should make sure you have a reputable shop do it because you need to make sure your crank harmonics do not interfere with your operating range, and if so you need to fix that by using a different balancer, anyhow ive seen prices from $250+

Usually, if the flywheel is SFI cert. then you wouldn't need to balance it on the crank. Flywheels need to be balanced to attain the SFI cert. Just like when "quality" pistons and rods will usually be balanced from the manufacturer, so balancing the "Rotating Assembly" is a waste of time. A flywheel without the SFI cert., I'd say yeah, get it done together. And stock pistons/rods would definitely benefit from an Assembly balance. Knife edging isn't a good choice for our motors; they are already good cranks. They just need a little massaging. Knife edging was for the old boys with the big blocks. |
