Is there a way to tell the year of an H22a4 block from just looking at it from the outside? All I can find are B/D series info. Never anything for the H guys!

The crankbolt on my H22a4 sheared off inside the crank and pretty much destroyed the keyway and surrounding area, so I'm shopping for a new crank/shortblock. Honestly, I don't know what year this A4 is when I bought it. Is there a way to tell from maybe the motor vin plate? Thanx for any info!

Last i checked all H22A4's were only on USDM TypeSH models which is 97-01.

The block is slightly different to fit the ATTS. oil filter is in a different position and so on. hope this helps

Hmm, are you sure?...I do know that all 5th gen Ludes came with an H22a4. (And not just the SH models either) But I'm trying to find out what specific year my motor came from. The reason I ask is because there was a significant design change from the 98+ H22a4's, with the larger main journals. I just need to know which year my H22a4 came from before I search for a new crank.

all the dates of the motor is stamped on the block and many many places it looks like a little thumbsize circle by the header is one and it reads the month and year the motor was made.

The only difference that is important relates to the Base versus SH. The location of the oil filter is different-on the end of the block (SH) rather than centered (BASE). As to what year- it really makes little difference at all since Honda played with the HP number. The camshafts are unchanged as far as I know. Also-you said you want only a shortblock so the head will be the one you now have. ALL h22a4 engines are otherwise identical for the USDM version.

If I can find a replacement crank, that'll save me a ton instead of having to purchase a whole short block.

So for that reason, I need to know what year my H22a4 is before I go looking for a replacement crank.

I'll check out afterburner's suggestion.

I have been told by various people that the 97 crank is different than the 98 and up. Also, in 97 they used floating wrist pins.

My motor is currently apart and I would be more than happy to give you any specs you need off of it when I get it back next week.

To tell what year your motor is, if it's complete, there are some small circles right above the header. They always have a 9 and then a veritcal line and then the next number. Let say it says 9 | 8 this means your motor was made in 98' but used on a 99 prelude.

It says 9 | 6. But then again, it does look like an 8. Argh! I'm just gonna tear this thing down!

I guess it's a 98 afterall. The serial number stamped under the H22a4 is 2007724! Time to go shopping for a bottom end rebuild!

Where can I find a block? I have a 1999 sh. I blew the block. Its cracked and I can't find it anywhere?
what models will fit? It does have the atts transmission.

If you buy one with transmission you have lots of options.
But if you want to keep your current transmission with ATTS you need (97-01) SH block/engine or JDM Type S
