...G23 VTEC...(56K...Definitely Beware)

EDIT: Here is the semi-disappointing dyno... After a few fixes, a boost controller, and some more tuning I think the numbers will be alot more impressive...

*Sorry for the shatty picture...

The Beginning:
Well it is getting closer to being complete so I decided it was time to start posting up some pics in case anyone was interested... As some of you know I spun the rod bearings in my H23 VTEC due to oil starvation and over-revving... So now I am taking my H22 head and putting it on an F23 block and boosting the hell out of it...

I got this F23a1 from a friend who has had it in his garage forever...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

This was the most recent pic I had of my H23 VTEC before I fooked it up...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

Hear are a few pics of the tear down...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

AEBS head studs that I will be re-using...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

Tranny coming off...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

I also looped my power steering lines this time around since I have been running with no belt for months...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

It looks a lot cleaner with no power steering, cruise control, and no windshield washer fluid reservoir...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

I haven't had a chance to weigh everything but I put it all in a bag and it has to weigh at least 20 lbs, and that doesn't even include the fluid you drain...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

Head came off in like 5 seconds just like Pirate said...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

This pic is supposed to show the block code, but you can't even see it cause the block is so worn...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

2.3L Iron sleeved...97mm Stroke... Mmmmm..... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

This is actually a picture of my H23 block with the F23 head gasket sitting on top just so you can see where the head isn't going to line up perfectly... Nothing a little Hondabond won't fix...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

This is a comparison of the H22 water pipe(top) and the F23 water pipe(bottom)... Pirate was lucky that an F22 water pipe fit perfectly for him but when using an H22 head there aren't any water pipes that will bolt up... So I am going to cut them both in half and connect them with a rubber hose, no biggie...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

This is a picture of the H22 alternator and AC brackets bolted to the F23 block... If you look at the alternator bracket you can see the it has 4 bolt holes while the F23 Bracket only had 3... However, it is interesting that when you bolt up the H22 Bracket there is a 4th hole that lines up perfectly but is not threaded because it was not intended to be using in an Accord... I could always tap the hole and use it but the three bolts will hold it just fine... But that just shows how similarly cast the F/H blocks were...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

And this is the motor half assembled...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

And the rear...
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

So I just need to put the tranny on the new motor and drop it in... Then it is time for the turbo install and to get it tuned on the dyno... They are having a dyno day at Titan Motorsports on Dec. 4th that I was planning on going to, but by the looks of things now I'm not gonna make it... But that's ok, I need to take my time and do things right anyways... More pics to come as the project progresses...

WOW.

I wish I could see the all motor dyno but the turbo dyno will do I guess. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

Still blows my fuckin mind how you can put a DOHC head on a SOHC motor, i guess i am just used to B and D series not getting along well. Cant wait for that turbo

Yeah, like you said I won't be starving for power and I don't want the extra vibration... I'm still undecided on the mount... Will the prelude mount bracket bolt to the f23 block? If not I know you used an f22 mount bracket so I'll figure something out... The motor will hopefully be in by this weekend... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

Nice, dude!!!

I really wanted to see a dyno of a NA G22/3 though http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

Awesome, I've been waiting for you to post up some pics of this project https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/embeer.gif

So you left the block completely stock?

What do expect the compression ratio to be?

Somewhere around 9-9.3:1?

looks like its gonna be a boost monster https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

im glad everyone is doing this setup now. i just got my hands on an f22a7 sohc nonvtec. i plan on putting an h23 head on it and some bo0ost

cant wait to see the dyno https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

so how does this compare to an H23VTEC (in both NA and FI trim)?

yeah man get an all motor dyno then go boost https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

great job on the hybrid, i see a new trend starting....will this hybrid have the same reving problems as the h23/vtec since it has even more stroke?

I can't wait for some dyno numbers.

Yeah I left the block completely stock... Compression is about 8.6:1, which is super low but super boost friendly... And that is another reason there won't be an all motor dyno, because it would be weak with this c/r...

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by monalisa overdrive &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">so how does this compare to an H23VTEC (in both NA and FI trim)?</TD></TR></TABLE>

Well an h23 has a bore and stroke of 87mm and 95mm respectively, and an f23 has a bore of 86mm but a stoke of 97mm.... So the torque comes up just a few hundred RPMs earlier than an h23... but the rod stroke ratio is a little lower... FI wise, accord blocks are known to hold up to 15 lbs of boost stock... So I can run more boost on this motor than if i had boosted my h23 vtec because f23's are iron sleeved and h-series are made of frm...

will this hybrid have the same reving problems as the h23/vtec since it has even more stroke?</TD></TR></TABLE>

Well the rod to stroke ration is worse...But the F23a1 does have newer 55mm crank mains which are larger then the 50mm crank mains of the h23 and pre98 h22 blocks... Theoretically the larger mains would reduce the amount of sideload and stress on the rods... But either way I'm taking it easy on this motor... Whatever rpm the motor stops making power at is gonna be my rev limit....

Are you going to run the H23 tranny again??

hOndafienD 04 11-29-2004 02:05 PM

looks promising....cant wait for the results!

yeah actually, what tranny will you be using? and for what purpose will this car be for? everyday with some track, or a lot of track?

Sam1am26 11-29-2004 02:46 PM

I'm going to be re-using my h23 tranny... The car is going to be daily driven and abused on the weekends if ya know what i mean...

Daboi630 11-29-2004 02:52 PM

good stuff

will you be taking donations as well https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

So once you are turboed aren't you going to have all sorts of traction problems? Maybe while it is all apart you could see what happens with an OBX LSD. I know that it sounds bad, but the B series ones have been holding up pretty well the FI forum. If it blows then get your money back and then get an H22 tranny. Just a thought...
