DIY: 4TH Gen Prelude H23A1 AC & Alternator Belt Install
08/08/05
Tools Required:
Phillips ScrewDriver -
10, 12, 14mm Sockets, Ratchet / Wrench
Replacement Belt (Mine was the GoodYear Gatorback V-Belt 4050420)
Note: Please do not work on the car when it is hot, wait till it cools off. Make sure you have ample lighting, and please be careful with your hands. You will be working in a tight spot and bruised knuckles is a common occurance.
First, remove the power steering belt. This requires lossening of the (3) 12mm bolts that hold the ps pump to the bracket. Loosen the tensioner bolt (10mm) and pry off the power steering belt. Now you have access to the ac and alternator belt.
Continue, by loosening a 14mm bolt on the alternator bracket, and a 12mm bolt that is connected to the tensioner bolt. Once those are loosened, proceed to loosen the tensioner bolt (10mm). You will have to loosen this bolt extensively to make it easy on yourselves! Push down on the alternator and it will swing down, creating slack in the belt. Remove the belt and dump it in the trash. Proceed by installing the new belt carefully around the crank pulley and the ac compressor pulley. The final pulley the belt go's around is the alternator pulley, you will notice it is difficult to position it onto the alternator pulley. Loosen the tensioner bolt all the way and make sure you push on the alternator to make it swing as far down as possible without the 14mm bolt falling out. Use a screwdriver carefully if needed and force the new belt onto the alternator's pulley. Admire it's beauty and tighten everything back down. Make sure the belts are tight, not too tight but TIGHT and not loose. Make sure all bolts are tightened and nothing is jiggling. Clear all your tools away from the engine bay and turn the car on. You shouldn't have any problems with squeaking or anything.
Belt: Gatorback V-Belt by GoodYear ALT & AC 4050420
Cost: $15.59 + TX (Autozone)
Install Time: 30 to 60 minutes. (It's a tight spot, what do u expect?)
Pro's: Brand new belt, no worries about it snizapping
Con's: PITA to install, be careful with fingers and knuckles. Wear gloves!

I've done the belt install basically the same way. However, the alt belt keeps shredding on the right side. Before i start the car the belt is aligned on all the pulleys. I get it on there by using a screwdriver and turning the engine to slip the friggen belt on there.
Anyone else have a problem with the belt shredding on one side?

The tensioner bolt needs to be loosened extensively to make the belt fit properly, otherwise you could struggle all you want with a screw drive and it wont go on. I don't advise turning the car on until the belt is properly in place, I was tempted to try that tactic but 48 minutes of forcing it on the careful and proper way was worth it to me. They can be a pain in the *** tho... that's the hardest part.. getting the new belt on.

It's all about adjusting the tension. Too tight or too loose and it could sqeal. And yes, there can be a very fine line between tight and loose.... You have a picture of your UR pulleys? I'm thinking of getting some, installing and writing up a DIY!

woo wee. went pretty smooth. thanks for this little bit of help. the 10mm guiding bolt on the bottom front of the alternator really needs a full loosening almost to the end for the alternator to swing completely down so you can slide the new belt on with ease. thanks again

If anyone is still checking this post. Which 10mm bolt loosens the belt? I have two under the alternator right next to each other H23A1. Facing the front of the car would it be the left or right bolt? I cant seem to get the alternator to move.
