Default converting base tranny to SH tranny...

I have a 2000 SH with a toasted second gear/syncro. My original plan was to swap in a base transmission since I wanted to mod beyond the ATTS capacity. After reading some of the stuff about it, and possibly trading my prelude on something else when this is done, I've decided to look into some other options. If I decide to go ahead and trade it I would prefer to leave it an SH.

My question is, I have my SH transmission in the car, and a base transmission in the garage. What is actually the difference between them? Could I convert that base transmission to an SH transmission, or would it be better just to take the gear/syncros out of the base tranny and put them into my SH? Or is there another better option?

Thanks for your help!

You cannot convert the base to an SH transmission because the differentials are physically different.

If the syncros match up just switch them out.

That's a better idea, but if you change the synchro hubs on the mainshaft, the end play in the mainshaft needs to be shimmed back to spec. Not many people have the necessary tools.

can't swap differentials huh? like put my SH diff in the one with the good gears and syncros?

oh, I'm pretty sure second gear itself would need to be replaced too. Possibly also the third gear syncro, although it may be the same one, I can't remember which gears are matched up for the syncros.

2 is paired with 4

3 with 5

think, bottom and top of the H...

anyways, no, the diffs won't swap, the sh diff has a huge hole on the passenger side....take a look at a diagram on a parts site.

Good luck w/it

Are you sure? I need to double check, but I thought it was 1-2, 3-4, and 5-R.

hmmm, that sucks. so it looks like I'm gonna be best off just doing the swap to the base then? or selling that and getting the right transmission.

the syncro matching makes sense as for top and bottom of the H, and of course I would need them for 2 and 3 if I just fix my SH tranny.

damn. know anybody trying to offload a decent SH tranny?

I checked, it's 1-2, 3-4, and 5-R. Look at the parts diagrams.

1-2 is on the countershaft, 3-4 and 5-R on the mainshaft. R isn't synchronized, but there's a "fake" synchro for the 5th gear fork.

ur right, going from up to down moves the hub, left to right moves the fork to a diff hub.

good to know, but I guess I either need to just eat it and do the conversion, or sell this transmission and get an SH one. Hate it when life changes a little. lol

Thanks again guys.
