Clutch Install DIY or PAY

Well I drove my car to my dad's shop and started at 7:00am. Disconnected every hose and adapter to the transmission. Removed the right sway bar, both, axles, all metal objects in the way. Too many to list !!
Cramped my hands inside the engine bay and unfastened all mounting brackets , except for the left side. I dropped the engine/w tranny down a couple of inches and dropped out the tranny. 2:13pm.
Sent flywheel to "Superior Friction". Pee'd on old P-plate.
There is way to much to list.

HOW MANY OF YOU HONDA TECH'ERS INSTALLED YOUR OWN CLUTCH??

Im speaking to those with H22 and H23 engines. Our E-mani sits 3 inches away from the radiator fan and the floor isn't visible from above like B16 B18.

EDIT: I screwed the poll.
If you took 2 days or more. WHY?

If you payed, well then how much?

Re: Clutch Install DIY or PAY (Puki)

I have installed my own clutch and flywheel on my H22.
It was not fun. It took about a full day but that was not rushing or anything. Tranny is a pain in the rear to get in and out because it does not go straight in and out. It has to be turned and takes alot of patience....which is not easy when ur under ur car and you have a 200 lb tranny on your chest..... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif

....but it was definitely worth it...churpin 3rd gear puts a smile on my face... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

took about 1 hr. but that was outside the car. the hardest part is the part you havent done yet, thats putting it back in. when you put the tranny back on the block, the input shaft grooves have to line up w/the grooves in the engine. i had to put like 3 bolts and slightly put pressure on them, then turn the engine by hand. it should go into place, when you turn the engine w/the tranny in gear, you should see the tranny turn.

Mine took less than an hour....

...but I have my motor tore apart on a bench!

I would NEVER pay anyone the outrageous amount of money they want to slap a new clutch in!

I paid... $300 or so for the clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate. Don't have a lift and I wasn't going to deal with the crap you have to do

Re: Clutch Install DIY or PAY (Puki)

the first time i did it i ran into problems not related to the transmission but it still prevented me from finishing the job. once i got all the 1000+ lbs of tq'ed bolts loose, it was much easier. 2nd time around it took me a day to remove/reinstall the transmission when i had to replace a broken bolt inside the tranny.

the only things i would pay someone to do on my car is probably paint and tint, two things i haven't quite mastered yet... if it's mechanical, you can bet i'll be doing it.
oh yeah, mount/balance tires and machine work https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

I'm doing it right now. My car has been on jack-stands for two weeks. BECAUSE I kept finding things I needed to fix/replace. But, when it's all back together I'll be running new: axles/flywheel/clutch/FULLY rebuild and blueprinted tranny/ and have a bunch of new suspension components. (ball joints from 92' with 150+ on them crack when you pry them apart. http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif )

hell, i can do one in about a 1.5-2 hrs

i can pull a motor in less than an hour though i've had to do it so many times https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

It took me about a week of working on it in the evenings. Actually taking the engine out of the car took me about 2 hrs cause I was going slow and had never take the motor out before. Actually putting the new clutch and stuff in only took about 30 mins. But there was a lot of cleaning. Ever seen what a clutch looks like when your rear main goes? Well here's some of what I got off. Yes that is my clutch.

Just picture that stuff all inside the bell housing with oil. Not fun to clean. Here's more pics if you want with a little story too. http://www.x-industries.org/pmz/clutch/
