well how would equate one track session > 5-6k miles of driving?

mobil one can def. hold up thru many track sessions. i just did it because i had 5w before and wanted to switch to 10w for a hotter temp.

like i said, even blackstone analysis proves some of these oils can last even higher than the posted 6k

The helms says 5-w30 for the h22a4, and so does my oil filler cap

LOL you are a complete idiot. First being that Mobil 1 IS THE LARGEST SYNTHETIC OIL MANUFACTURER IN THE WORLD. Second being that Redline has been known to purchase their PAO and other parts of their formula directly from Mobil 1. Third is... well, you're just an idiot for thinking that no race cars run Mobil 1. I don't need any "evidence" to show you Mobil 1 is already in racing by the stickers plastered across all the Mobil 1 sponsored race cars.

Too bad you're an idiot as otherwise and you'd know the Redline concoctions tend to increase your Fe wear within your engine before you start tooting the Redline horn. At the track BOTH will work fine as long as you're getting the correct oil weight. Heck, conventional works fine as well just that you'll generally burn more conventional and have a little bit more sludge vs synthetic...

In any case, most people change their oil way too soon. It's the FILTER that will more than likely crap out before the oil.

Call me stupid, but I really don't see how anyone could do that.

Maybe it's just better suited for high RPM's? But wouldn't that make it moot for the daily driver who hardly ever goes past 4K?

Honda's Prelude filter is made by Fram. It's a POS. That's why you get the S2000 filter. It's NOT made by Fram.

I did not know that. Thanks

How big of a pressure loss are we talking about when using a s2k filter?

don't know for sure. a few psi is what i'm inclined to say. not really an issue unless you're at a track day or something.

and for the record, i use fram filters sometimes: the x2 isn't too bad. It's either FRAM, Mobil 1, or K&N filters since they're the easiest to get my hands on and have shown to be at the least, decent.

if you are concerend about oil pressure and still want to use a genuine honda filter, i would recomend getting your hands on some HAMP filters. The come in three sizes. Generally people use the small filters, which helps maintain oil pressure quite well. There is also the medium size filter, which i believe is the same size as the usdm honda filters.

hell i just run castrol high mileage oil and ac delco filter. they both do just fine and are good for the price. ive got 137,000 on my lude and she still purrs and synthetic oil has actually been found to last at 15,000 miles or more UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. The reason you change it before then..around 8-10k is cus the filter starts becoming restricted.

Call me obsessive but i change my oil every 2500-3500miles with partial quart top offs. h22's are notorious for oil consumption. Valve seals, and cam seals will help. But even from the factory they burn oil. I say check your oil regularly, make sure you're lubricated, top off as needed, and at least change at the recommended interval 3750miles unless you run synthetic then as yield said 5-10kmi. Measuring how much oil is left in your engine between intervals will give you a better idea of how much oil your motor burns or leaks (that's beyond the scope of this discussion). I have seen approx 1qt per 1000mi, of consumption, with conventional oil and half that for royal purple at least on my vehicle. So i think top offs are especially important.

Send some samples to blackstone for analysis. Let a professional determine how long you have before changing your oil.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Yes I use Royal Purple too. After installing a home made catch can between my PCV and intake manifold, I also noticed a drop in oil consumption. Instead of adding up to 2 quarts in a 3000 mile interval , I may add the remaining amount of the 6th quart that is left after the initial change. I guess that would be less than 1 quart huh?

olive oil or canola oil....but NO peanut oil....might cause an allergic reaction.
but i use mobil 1 about every 3000-4500 miles...with about 2 qts top off between changes.

Hey guys, I am going to change the oil on my neighbor's 99 sh. Not to discriminate but she is older (retired) and I think it's safe to say that her car has never hung out in vtec. Anyways we live at sea level in California and when I went to kragen's to buy the oil (prior to checking her oil cap or researching here) both the employee and another customer in line looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if I could run 10w30. I know in our climate 5w30 is more than sufficient. But I have been running Mobil1 FS 10w30 in my b16EF for 3 years now no problem. I was just going to run the same in her car with a fram filter and call it a day but now I have some concerns.

Her car has 50k and she has always gotten her oil changed at Honda before I offered to do it for her. I am concerned about using fully synthetic after the car has been run on honda's oil (i'm assuming non-synthetic.. correct me if i'm wrong) because people are talking about the switch leading to oil leaks / consumption.

Also, fram filters were bashed earlier in this thread.. should I be concerned? I have always used fram with no problems.. but it appears that someone outed Prelude Fram filters in articular.

In the end I just want to give my neighbor a quality oil change at the cost of only parts to her. So throw in your .02!

P.s. (to the OP) as mentioned, I always use Mobil1 Fully Synthetic 10w30 with a fram filter on my B16. every 3-4k and to everyone who argues that you can run longer on fully synthetic.. I agree.. but My oil is always dirty at 3k.. so thats my excuse.

Any help is appreciated guys.

My car currently has 167,000 miles and I run Castrol GTX with the Honda blue OEM oil Filter. It runs fine, no problems at all. I would love to switch to synthetic but I know for a FACT this is going to cause HUGE leaks, leading to change all the seals and gaskets.. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks

I switched from conventional Castrol GTX 5W30 to full synthetic Mobil1 0W30 at 135,000 miles. I now have 152,000 miles, and I have experienced NO CHANGE in oil consumption. I do not have any leaky seals either. I had already replaced the valve cover gasket, the distributor o-ring, the VTEC solenoid gasket/screen, and the cam seal prior to the switch to synthetic. I also use the S2000 oil filter (15400-PCX-004) or the K&N filter (HP1004).

'94 VTEC with 253,000mi

GC 0w30 every 5-7k, S2000 Filter.

I've run the car like this for the 100,000 mi I've owned it, and never run into any problems. Gets about 27mpg city/hwy too.

Mobile-1 and Royal purple are crap. Mobile-1 had all of their oils pulled from the shelves in O'reilly stores in the state of California because they do NOT meet oil standards. royal purple is overpriced and did poorly in stress tests.

some of the best oils out there are valvoline and believe this or not quaker state.

Where did everyone hear that honda oil filters are made by fram?

you realize there are three filters offered by honda? One is for older models (pre 1990), one for the s2k, and then one for everything else.

While not running a vtec, I do have a couple of thoughts...first of all, Honda uses two suppliers for their OE filters, but it's a moot point because any non-generic filter should work fine, as long as you change it regularly. Synthetic oils, IMO, rule. Less sludge, longer drain intervals, etc. I run Amsoil 10w-40 in my kid's 88 Si with 190k on his B20A and no issues with the engine....clutch maybe, but that's due to his lack of driving skills (which is why he's got the Prelude and not my DD). I have run synthetics in my DD since it was new, I usually change the oil at around 15k miles (the filter gets changed 3x in that span). Change your filter every 5k at the very latest and stick with quality synthetics and your engine should lead a happy life.
