01 Prelude - Audio Help
 

Howdy folks,

Have a few questions maybe some of you audio geeks can help with.

I have to say i don't know jack about car audio at all.

I replaced the stock stereo with a new Pioneer DEH-P4900IB thinking the stock was broken but come to find out later the previous owner had cut the antenna cable someplace. So all I can use atm is CD's till I take it in to be replace for 2-300 dollars at the Honda dealer or try my luck at it.


Speakers:
The front driver/passenger door mid speakers are trashed and need to be replaced.
The tweeters might be ok..but I do not know for sure.
The rear ones seem to be in good condition and probably ok for now.

I've been trying to find some good mid speakers that will fit in the current but I keep finding that the speakers I have are 5.25in and only have 3 screw points rather then 6.5in and 4 screw points like normal speakers making it hard to find exact fits.

Replacement speakers recommendations?

The speakers are slightly bigger than the factory door speakers, but I modified them to fit. If you don't want to modify the speakers or the door, make sure you purchase some 6½" speakers with a 5¼" cut-out size. You also only have about 2" of mounting depth. However, must people take a dremel to the door panel behind the speaker. This is because it's tough to find speakers shallow enough to fit without cutting.

As for the 3 screws vs 4 screws, lots of speakers come with adapter plates for this conversion.

You only need an amp if the speakers you purchase have a higher nominal wattage than the stereo. For example, your stereo is 50x4 max and 22x4 constant. If you purchase some high end speakers with a 250W max and 100W nom, then yes, you'll want an amp to push them.

Good luck with your antenna. I can't believe someone cut it intentionally. That's stupid.

Thanks Kron for the information.

Another question regarding watts on the speakers.

My radio is a 4x50 max and 4x22 constant max....

Is that saying at max it can push out to 4 speakers is 50 watts each or just a total all around 200watts?
Since Prelude has a 6 speaker setup...i'm not utilizing it all correctly?

Also if i were to get higher end speakers like you say at 250w..would that mean i could turn up my radio to max and not hear any distortion or static sound?

50x4 means you can AT MOST push 50watts to each of your 4 channels. Yes, you have a 6-speaker system, but the tweeters in the doors are on the same channel as the other door speakers. And no, it doesn't mean you won't get distortion if you turn the volume to max. Lastly, Kronn has 2 N's.

01's have a 6.5's up front ann 6x9's out back...with most aftermarket speakers you're to have to cut the speaker basket to make them fit. The rear speakers you may have to use the spacer that comes with the speakers. it's pretty simiply though, so no worries

I recently bought 6.5"s for my door speakers and they don't fit...blasphemy.. I am going to have to trim down the parts that hold the screws. Make sure that they will fit in your door before purchasing them. I have Fosgate 6x9s in the back, and they're not that good... I personally like Infiniti speakers, but you will need an amp to push them.

I was worried about the size since the ones i pulled out of my door were only 5 1/4 rather than the normal 6 1/2. Probably the only reason I'm hesitant to order online since i want to be able to be sure they fit.

some speaker recommendations - Alpine, Infinity, Focal and Eclipse. ive heard Eclipse is the best bang for your buck.

Look man, here's how you should purchase speakers. Go to a store that has car audio equipment like Best Buy. Look at and listen to all the speakers. Pick the one you like the most and then order it online.

And my vote is for component or 1-way speakers.

definately listen first though. Unfortunately, speakers in most stores are amped, where it sounds like they're not going to be in your car, so there will be some differences in how they sound. Buying online is great, because the markup on car audio is huge, but you have to know what you want first. I work for Best Buy, and know how much of a discount I get on car audio. It's insane how much money we make off that stuff. (no, I can't get anyone else discounts, sorry guys :) )

In my car I have a pioneer head unit, Alpine Type-R in the rear, Infinity Kappa components up front, all running off of an alpine V-12 Amp. I also have a pair of Infinity subs running off an infinity amp. Sometime here I'll be replacing the last of the alpine stuff with infinity and selling the alpine, but haven't gotten around to it. Anyway, I can tell you that my old pioneer speakers fit up front no problem, but the infinity ones took some modification of both the speaker basket at the bottom, and the tweeter mounting at the top. I chose to put the tweeters in the stock position rather than mount them somewhere else.

Pretty much any 6x9 should fit fine in the rear, I've had pioneer, MB Quart, and now the Alpines with no troubles. Finding space for amps and subs might be tricky though if you ever decide to go that way. With 2 12" subs in a sealed box, 2 amps and a capacitor in the trunk, I may as well never bother opening the trunk, there's not much room left.

You can also go to Pep Boys, and even Wal Mart and in the little car audio section they sell replacement antennas, the cable, as well as adapters/extenders and whatever you need. Just run the cable where the stock one was, its a pretty simple job. Plug it in the back of the deck and you should be good. It can be a cheap little mod that'll take you an hour tops first time, and you'll have your am/fm again and learn more about your car in the process. If you installed the deck yourself, this shouldnt be difficult for you at all.

Regarding the antenna cable...i thought it ran under the steering wheel and up the left side to the roof and then back to the little box on the rear window.

How hard is it to remove that plate/bracket between the windshield/drive side door and removing the covering on the roof?

Doesn't sound to be all that hard if only a hours time if you know what your doing!

The actual antenna in a 5th gen is located in the rear window and is integrated with the rear defroster grid. It sounds like what you need is the 'antenna feeder cable'.

I think replacing it yourself would be easy. All you would have to do is remove the radio and the a pillar moulding, and then lower the headliner to route the new antenna cable to the rear of the car.
