Ok.... it's not a honda but this is the best interWeb board in the whole world. So I thought I would ask you guys.

I just purchased a '01 GSX-R 600 and I have a little problem. The engine has not been ran in about 7 months and the oil is pretty dirty. My friend owned the bike prior to me and it only has 4900 miles on it. He said he never had the oil light problem that I am having currently though.

After the engine warms up a bit, the oil light will flash at idle. The oil level is full so I know that isn't the problem... could the dirty oil cause the light to come on by any chance? Upon start-up when the engine is warm the bike wants to stall out when starting in 1st gear. If you stall out once, it will take 2 or 3 times to fire the bike back up without it dying on you. The engine temp is about 220-degree's when this happens. The fans are coming on by the way. A brand new battery was the last thing installed on this bike... and again the light ONLY flashes at idle.

I plan on changing the oil, coolant, spark plugs, and possibly the plug wires if you guys think that is necessary. If you have any comments reguarding the light flashing I would greatly appreciate it.

I say if he bikes has been in storage for about 7 months, and not run, you may want to change all those things that you mentioned especially the oil, and the filter. Depending on where the bike was, a lot of humidity might have gone in the bike, the gas might be bad, the oil is just all messed up.....change it all. Start out fresh.

The tank only had about 1/2 gallon when I filled it back up. I decided to throw in some premium to up the octane a bit of the gas that was sitting for so long. It didn't help out with the issues though.

Anyways... I'll be replacing everything before I ride it again

has the gas in the tank been sitting without any Stabil? If so, don't run it, drain the tank & try to remove as much fuel from the system as possible. You don't want it to gum it up. It may also be a good idea to completly clean the tank to prevent any junk from making it's way back into the fuel system.

Yep... it sure has. I rode the bike for about 10 miles before filling it up with 93 octane. The bike calls for 87 but I figured 93 would be better to counter the gas that has been sitting for 7 months.

so if it has been sitting without any type of fuel stabilizer in it, then there is a chance that the fuel system may be clogged up with gunk, which might account for the stals and hard starts

clean it out good.

Would you recommend adding any stabilizer to the 3 gallons of 93 I put in? Exactly how should I go about unclogging the system? Send the injectors out to be cleaned and flow-tested? Replace the fuel filter and filter on the fuel pump? I'm a bit new to bikes....

Using a decent fuel system cleaner should do the trick. I swear by the following two products:

I would follow what the service manual recommends for your bike. Adding a stabilizer now would probably not help. If you don't have the service manual some of the basic things that could/should be done are:

drain/clean fuel tank
inspect/replace if necessary the fuel pump
clean/purge all fuel lines
clean/inspect air intake track (everything from the airbox to the inlet just at the throttle boddies)
if you do the last step yourself, make sure you do have a service manual handy to make sure you put everything back as directed by the manufacturer. Don't want to create any vacumm problems from not having things line up as they should.

as for the injectors, if you don't think their too bad, running a cleaner of some sort might be better than removing them to have them cleaned and balanced.

after you put everything back together nice and clean like, run nothing but 93. A friend of mine has the same bike, and was running mid grade (89) here and wasen't having any problems for a few months (not as much riding as probably you can do because of the crappy weather). His cheap *** dropped to 87 for a while and is now experienceing hesitation around 5k. I say it's the gas, but he will be taking it in to make sure. All shops he called said to run 93, but it's funny, the manual & service manual for the 01 says to run a "minimum of 87" but doesn't directly recommend anything else. The manual(s) for my bike (03 ZX-6R) recomends that you run the highest octane available in your area.

they are laid back with shipping, but so far I haven't had any problems with them.

I found a scanned pdf of the one for your bike for my friend but it is pretty usless when it comes to using it to perform detailed things in which a pic would be nice.

I forgot to do a follow up... it turned out to just be the oil. After it was changed, everything cleared right up
