Re: honda scooter?!?! (arjusmc)
The helix and the reflex use the same liquid cooled 250cc engine. One is a little different in the angle of the head, but otherwise they are the same. Both are freeway legal (at least in my state). They will go fast enough to keep up with most freeway traffic. If you are thinking about buying new, you should check out Kymco. They offer a 250 and 500 and are of high quality. The used 250 Honda scooters go for a premium, at least in my area. The Suzuki Burgman 400 is an excellent choice for freeway work also. The 650 burgman even more so.

Re: honda scooter?!?! (MSchu)
If you're going vintage any way, forget the 50's. Might as well buy a 200cc two stroke. Something that goes fast. Some of the modfied ones go a buck twenty. They aint cheap though.

Re: honda scooter?!?! (MSchu)
Honda is making a 250cc version of the Ruckus this yr. passenger seat folds flat to close the cargo compartment. If I was after I new scooter, that's what I would buy.
The regular Ruckus is awesome, but acks any closed-off cargo space.

Re: honda scooter?!?! (Ross R)
I've seen that 250 before. It has already been around for two years in Japan. Before you go out an buy one, compare prices with the Burgman 400 and Kymco 500. From what I've heard the 250 Ruckus will be priced relatively high.

you better find one thats already titled since CA changed its policy as of Jan 1st on converting dirt bikes -> street bikes. But there are always loop holes

It really depends on the speed of the freeway traffic in your area. Some freeways move at 55-65, some 85 or more... Hell, the freeways around me, you're lucky to be going 55. Most of the time youre stuck around 35 in traffic. But like I said in CA anything over 150cc and you're freeway legal.
Your only two choices are a 250 scooter or a brand new sport bike. That seems kind of stupid to me. There are lots of great bikes out there in between those two extremes. One of my friends daily freeway rode a honda xr250 for years. One of my other friends used a GS500. You're sure to read about EX500's if you search this forum's archives. Those all seem like better options than a scooter or a sportbike if you're worried about theft. Naughty kids love to "borrow" your scooter to take it for a joy ride. Vandalism and theft is a big problem for scooter owners. A 250 or 500 motorcycle seems to draw less unwanted attention than a scooter does, and they are not worth nearly as much as a supersport.

all i have to do is bring the title to the clerks office in NH and it shows up in their computer as a honda 50cc moped. no inspection or anything.

Scooter versus Motorcycle...
scooter
- small
- high gas mileage
- some come with large storage bins
- motorcycle riders don't wave at you
motorcycle
- not as compact
- freeway speeds come easy
- usually only underseat storage
- scooter riders don't wave at you
For the money, a 250-500cc motorcycle is more versatile than a 50-250cc scooter. Those large scooters (ie, Silverwing) cost almost as much as a cheap motorcycle.
If you're really close to work, why not ride a bicycle?
