Icon3 Say Hello To My New 2002 CBR 954rr Project!

Hello Honda-Tech. Long story short, I picked up this 2002 954RR for only a grand! It's a clean title. The fairings were once red, but the bike was actually stolen and whoever stole it painted the whole bike black. (How sad, I know.) The cops eventually found it and returned it to its rightful owner. He was in need of cash so I picked it up. Anyways, I have a friend that does really good body work and he offered to fix my whole fairings and paint them for FREE! I just have to pay for the supplies. The fairings have some cracks but I've been thinking about making it a street fighter. The owner just installed new front and rear Pilot Power tires, Scotts Steering Dampener and it comes with an aftermarket Micron exhaust which has been made into a shorty pipe. What do you guys think? Was it a good deal for a grand? Any input is welcomed. Cheers!

This is what I want to do to it..

Update: I'm selling the Scotts Steering Stabilizer if anyone is interested. I'm also looking for a 954 headlight assembly and the upper fairing (OEM) as well.

I also forgot to add, the fairings and gas tank are already off and being sanded to get ready for paint.

I like the idea but the brass knuckle heal guards are really lame. Dont do that.

:::EDIT:::

and don't forget the rear seat cover

What's up 85. I'm really debating whether I should purchase the street fighter kit or just replace the upper fairing and headlight. It's tough finding an OEM upper fiaring for cheap.. Any ideas on where to get the seat cowl and upper fairing?

The fairings are already prepped and ready for paint. I'm just debating what color to do. I want to paint them red again but to me it seems like the 954 looks funky when it's all just one color and no decals...

Oh, and don't worry. I'm not a fan of those brass kunckles either.

Yes it does. I need to replace the exhaust as well, or at least try and find a gasket that bolts the pipe to the actual muffler piece. It has a leak which I believe is causing a slight sputter at low RPM's (Usually from a dead stop). I also noticed large amounts of thick black grease on the chain, sprocket and also on the bottom of the front forks. Maybe I need to take that to a mechanic and get it chcked out..

Has anyone on here ever done a 954 Streetfighter? I'm having trouble finding out exactly what I need in order to convert it to Dirtbike Handlebars.

No, but I'm also interested in this. I bought a triple tree for a 07' 1000RR one time that was used. It had been drilled for use with a riser bar. If and when you do all this, please post lots of pics.

I have a good idea of what it actually needs in order to install the dirt bike handlebars. You can actually purchase a triple clamp that already comes with risers so that you can install the DB handle bars. Since the bars stand higher than the stock bars, you will need to purchase a longer stainless steel brake line. You might also need a longer throttle cable. I'll post up a website that sells them for about 200 bucks and all you need to do is purchase the Renthal bars.

Thanks, man! I really couldn't pass it up. I was about to cough up 5k on a Gixxer or an R1. For a grand, I could afford to do whatever I want to it and even sell it for a profit at the end of the summer.

Here is a picture of what it used to look like before it was stolen

And here is an update on how the fairings look. They still need to be sanded down a little more and he needs to fill a few more cracks before it gets prime job, sanded down again and then ready for paint. I still haven't pulled the upper fairing off yet. I don't know whether I should actually replace it or just have my buddy try and fix the old broken one.

Any ideas on what color I should do it? I was thinking Glossy black, OEM Red or gray.

You really can't go wrong with gloss black. you could look into a vinyl wrap for the bike if you're into that. Some find it cheesy, I don't think some wraps look too bad.. kinda fits with the streetfighter styling.

So... I was looking at my bike earlier today and noticed that there was a little leak from the oil pan. Upon further inspection, I noticed that there were two oil pan bolts missing side by side which is causing the small oil leak. I was wondering if anyone has the number for the bolts or if I can purchase the bolts at a store?

Good looking out DC2. I found the bolts at a hardware store. I paid a buck for four. No more leak. Now I just need to try and remove all of the grease build up on the chain, rear sprocket and swing arm. Any ideas on how to easly remove this stuff? It's on pretty good..

Anyways. I think I'm going to paint the bike a gloss black. I haven't seen any completely black 954rr's without any stickers. Maybe I'll just go with an all black theme. After paint, I'm taking it up to my teachers shop and have him check to see if the forks need to be rebuilt or if it needs any type of mechanical work that I'm not familar with.

this is true... Switching the bars on my 919 to the 1000RR front end caused a problem. 2 days ago i ordered a clutch cable for a 99' 900RR that I'm hoping it will work because the engine block is similar. we'll see... I would consider using the stock throttle cable from another honda bike like the 919.

I will. I became a member of the Custom Fighters forum as well and they are very helpful. Here is a link to my thread so you guys can stay up to date with what's going on. It seems like there arent very many people on Honda-Tech that are into Streetfighters.

This is the look that I'm aiming for..

Oh, and as far as a headlight goes... I'll post a picture after work!
