Just quick question i do see that alot say get a 250r because its smaller. The weight between 250r - r6 is about 70-80 pounds different. I mean with that distrubed throughout the bike it doesn't seem like it make much difference maybe it does i have only rode dirt bike and yzr 600. As long as you don't punch it on a 600 i wouldn't see what the difference from going say 30 mph on a r6 then doing 30 mph on a 250r. Not trying to prove anyone wrong or right just trying to learn. I say as long as your smart you can go slow on any bike. Just my opion

The problem is that new riders don't have very good control. Get ham-fisted with the throttle on a 600 and you'll be in trouble faster than on a 250.

Anybody on here ride a dual sport? I'm liking the older KLX and KLR bikes. Leaning towards a KLX250S, but still months away (MSF registration should open soon).

Any opinions on purchasing 2004-2006 bikes with 10k-20k miles?

Been considering another bike but not sure if high mileage bikes would be worth the purchase. Granted that the previous owner took care of the bike.

Over here in Finland, if you want an unrestricted motorcycle license, you have to do the exam with a bike that has over 25kw (which is about 36hp) and that excludes most 250cc or less, as most of them have less than the required power.
Personally I don't see the purpose of getting a 250cc bike, my first bike is a 600cc and I'm still alive and I've rode 1000cc bikes aswell and no I dont have much experience, but I'm still unhurt. Also theres more choices than 250cc and 600cc, theres 500cc and 400cc thats in between them, 250cc will get tiresome riding on touring as it lacks in torque, something bigger bikes have more of, every small hill means you have to downshift a notch, that adds to fuel consumption aswell...

just my opinion, its all about respecting the throttle.

Even in Italy you have to graduate with at least a 25kW bike, but you cannot do it until you are 21.

Curious about mileage on older cb450s, 550s, etc... I've been scouring craigslist for a bit, and seen some that look decent, but not sure what mileage mark I'm looking at.

My buddy just picked up a '68 triumph (might be off a year or two, can't remember) and it relit my desire to get a bit of a project bike. However, I've never really ridden so want something that's also a decent beginner bike. And I really don't like street bike/ninja type crotch rockets at all. Love the look of an older bike, and I feel older bikes/cars have a bit of soul compared to newer

Not going to lie, Cafe Racer'd out bikes also get my ricer juices flowing

I have a question. How much could I sell a fully restored 1995 honda cbr900rr? Has 10,000 miles on it, white/purple/blue paint withe the yellow rims, full exhaust and 2 matching helmets.

so just an update from page 27

after looking for a honda cb-1 and winning an ebay auction for one at $2150 only to not meet the reserve, I ended up buying honda hawk gt for my first bike. Just got done with the msf about a week ago and been on 2 rides with the new bike so far.

Having a blast and getting a feel for the bike. Trying to get some rides in before winter really sets in and its time to go over the bike. It definitely needs a carb cleaning as it only went 40 miles over the past year before I got it in november, and seems to enjoy a little choke even after warming up. Just getting a feeling of how its running before I go through the carbs etc, this way I have a baseline. Good luck to everyone else just getting into riding, i'm loving it so far

Any other hawk or cb-1 owners floating around here?

I had one a few years ago, bought it on eBay for $1400.. bike had little over 4000 mi. on it. It had sat in someone's garage for over 6 years, I had to rebuild the carbs with new jets and re-seal the inside of the fuel tank. But once I got it running, it was a typical honda, just runs like a clock.
Screamin' at 12k rpm at around 70 mph... it sounded like a MotoGP bike with the Kicker exhaust.

I still have many parts for the CB-1, including some Hepco Becker crashbars, rear luggage rack, a set of wheels, air box and other misc. items.. avail. for sale.. cheap.

+1 on used bikes off Craigslist too. I've bought and sold 2 off there over the last few years and made a profit on each. Started with a Ninja 250 and then had a ZR7.

a 250 will teach you how to ride, a 600 or liter bike will teach you how to ride like a bitch or kill you.

buying a 250 is wasting your money a 600 is a good starter bike u just have to respect the bike and know how to react in situations

Respectfully disagree, when it comes to letting teenagers learn how to ride, 250 is a safer bike to learn, especially Rebel. It, like civic, keeps resale value pretty good as long as it is not dropped. But yeah, for some grown up and big persons, 600 may be a good starter bike.

The "you might die if you give it too much throttle" factor isn't the only reason people recommend something other than a 600 supersport to beginners. Besides, a used 250 is never a waste of money, as they hold their value very well.

The biggest challenge for me was managing all the controls while also trying to manage balance at speed and balance of the weight at low speeds. I had a tendency to roll into the throttle at random times, especially at low speeds. I say this without having ridden a 600 class bike, but my thoughts are that a bike with less power won't penalize you as much if there's unexpected acceleration.

I also don't universally agree that starting on a 600 class is the same as a 250. There are a wide variety of 600 bikes that all position you differently and have differing seat heights. The Kawasaki 6R and Suzuki GSX-R6 are definitely harder to manage because you have more weight on your arms, the fuel tank is much bulkier, and the seat height is higher than a 250R. When you've already got so much to manage, the extra power and awkward ergonomics don't help.

Thoughts: Shoei RF-1200 vs Icon Airframe Ghost Carbon? I can get the Icon at cost which is $250. Not sure on my price on the Shoei.

Thread revival..

With weather turning cold, used bikes are cheap..
Picked up a nearly stock 2001 SV650S, minor body work scratches,
needs carb sync, oil/filter/coolant/brake fluid change, 17k miles.
$1250 cash.
