Decipher Honda repair talk
So it started out of the blue when coming out from approximately 90 minutes in a store, my 1996 Odyssey would not shift out of "park." Thank heavens for that override on top of the steering column. But then as I entered the drive toward my home, there was smoke from under the hood (not white), and it felt very hot like I had the heater on (which it wasn't). The smoke and heat quickly subsided.
Oh, I also suddenly lost all of the dash indicators.
So later I go out to check everything out, and now the turn signals aren't working. Seems to be fuse 10-A. Replacing it works, but it blows again immediately.
So I thought I'd take it to the dealership, assuming they would have more experience than independent mechanics with Honda electrical workings.
Anyway, here's the report from the technician. And they want $1000 to replace the engine harness (said it will take them 10 hours) and that the part is discontinued in any case.
"VSS on trans shorted out and melted on engine harness...its connectors as well. Left [what?] unplugged. Advised owner that vehicle is unsafe to drive."
Now the turn signals and everything is working, but the brakes feel a bit mushy.
If they unplugged the engine harness and/or VSS, how would that affect the car, if at all?
