Gen 1 Honda Insight Ground Control coilovers

Just in case anyone out there wants to get a better suspension setup for their Gen 1 Honda Insight, your wait might soon be over. Currently in the prototype phase and under going testing on my Insight...

Any estimated time for release?

Blue-Civic-Hybrid 09-13-2011 10:07 AM

Re: Gen 1 Honda Insight Ground Control coilovers

Time of release is dependent upon aftermarket dampers/shocks and overall interest. The rear shocks of the Insight will be troublesome to reproduce due to size and weird mounting.

Hello,

how`s things at the moment?

Anyone rolling around on a ground control setup yet? I know i'm somewhat reviving a dead thread but i'm interested in seeing what options may soon be available for us gen1 owners.

Re: Gen 1 Honda Insight Ground Control coilovers

I've had the GC's on my insight since i posted the prototype pics and i have replaced the rear shock with some from Monroe.

As for ride comfort, they are definitely much stiffer than stock but improve handling greatly in my opinion. No more "floaty" suspension feel at speed and door handle scraping cornering.

These are available on GC's website for all Gen 1 Insights.

If you want more info for Gen 1's in general, check out www.insightcentral.net

Is it true people use caddy shocks as a replacement for the rears?

No, the Monroe shocks I used are from a 1995 Chevy Cavalier.

The Cadillac Cimarron was the same chassis as the Cavalier, and used the same rear shocks.

Ground control makes awesome coilovers. We've used them on our past track cars and they handled amazing!

How many company's make coilover kits for the Insight besides GC and Tanabe? Seems like an older chassis but doesn't it work with the CR-Z as well?

I'm curious when you go lower with the Insight what type of camber kit do you use?

Rear doesn't matter but the fronts you can use an SPC camber kit, bought mine at Summit.

It's a twist beam suspension. You shim it in the rear to change camber and/or toe.

TunerNoob, thanks for the info, I didn't know about those shims for the rears. I don't think I will use them since my alignment seems to be none the worse.

Here is my Insight lowered on GC's and custom rear shocks from GAZ shocks in the UK.

I hope you got it aligned anyway. If the car had any negative camber stock in the rear, it will now have additional toe in due to the change in angle of the twist beam.

Also, now that you have a more performance oriented ride height and (assuming) spring rates, you probably want a more performance oriented alignment. Shim the rear to 0° toe instead of the factory specified toe in and the car will feel much more responsive.

Perfect! Yes, the spring rates are about 20 to 25% stiffer. As for the rear toe, it was checked and it was at 0 degrees during my alignment.
