There is an electric motor attached directly to the steering rack for power assist, rather than a remote hydraulic pump. The upsides are that it's more compact, less complex, makes less noise, doesn't create a parasitic drag on the engine (results in more power and better fuel economy), and eliminates the possibility of fluid leaks. The level of power assist can also be varied electronically based on road speed.
The system has its own warning indicator in the dash, which will come on if there is a problem with the system. Check the manual for more details.
Honda began using electric power steering with the NSX in '91, and is now using it on '00+ S2000, '02+ Civic Si & Hybrid, '05+ RL, '07+ Fit, '08+ Accord, '09+ TL and TSX, and more to come.

That's right there is no power stearing, It's electrionc power stearing. it's ugly big round box on the left side on bottom behind the engine on top of the crossmember. looks like it cost money if it breaks.

The motor alone is $333; the complete rack including motor is $873. We've already had to replace a rack that was bent in a collision.
Just like a hydraulic system though, you can choose not to repair it if there is a problem. The car will still be driveable; it just won't have steering assist. At least it has no fluid to leak.
