That is not actually the case.
The tread tends to wear more evenly when inflated to the max sidewall pressure.

I had my light on today, i still kept driving over 30 miles or so, when i finally reached my designation, filled up, it was 9.3 gallons at the pump. So i would say, when the light comes on, you should have a little more than 1 gallon left.
