2007 fit, mode control knob not working

2007 fit, mode control **** not working
Fan blower will only blow straight out vents. Can not get it to switch to defrost. Somebody mentioned the switch may work on a vacuum line as opposed to a mechanical cable.
Does anyone know how I go about trouble shooting this problem. I m assuming the front dash panel has to come off. Is this correct añd is this a lot of trouble.
