Default too much?

2001 crv. 2.0 engine needs a valve job.reputable shop quoted me 1700 to 2000 dollars. is that about right? car has 165000 miles on it. I don't question it being the valve train but the price to fix it stunned me a little.

You could just replace the head for a few hundred dollars + labor

This generation suffered from receding valves. It causes a ticking from the top end and eventually will cause a check engine light for misfires. You typically need a whole new head as recommended above. It may be worth while to look into one of the low mileage engines they are bringing over from Japan. A few guys at the shop have done this in their CRVs and have been vey pleased.

yeah way too much. valve job takes 2 hours maximum and even if they charged $200/hr for labor, they are overcharging you. have you considered attempting to do the valves yourself? its pretty simple and there are tons of diy videos and guides on how to do it. you would probably end up spending 100 bucks on tools, an hour researching how to do it and 2 hours to do it.

B18B heads are identical to B20B heads
Put an end to b18 vs b20 head debate... - Team Integra Forums - Team Integra
There is an abundance of them for sale and in junk yards.

I have grievances against the 2 JDM motors I've bought. Both burned oil despite their "low milage". Good compression from a cold engine only tells you nothing catastrophic happened inside. The engine could still have serious problems. Request a leak down test if you choose a JDM replacement as suggested.

I don't know about replacing the valves but that does seem like too much. It is definitely too much for just an adjustment.
If you can change your oil you can do an adjustment. I did mine for the first time and it took me 4 hours (lots of reading and double-checking). I then re-adjusted them two days later because I was parnoid I did them wrong and the second time took me two hours. Some people say it'll take 45 minutes. I'm slow.

Valve job is not the same as a valve adjustment. The shop will replace the guides, valves, grind the seats, and install new springs.

If you're replacing the head on your engine it will first have to be removed. I personally would pull the engine from the car and make things easy on myself.

Find yourself a service manual. They are free online. Research the net there are many posts and videos of people doing exactly what you plan to do.

A good used head is a good alternative for fixing your engine. Find one that has been cleaned and inspected by a reputable machine shop. They should inspect the head for warpage, proper sealing of the valves, and for cracks. With the head off I would replace the valve stem seals.

Every Honda engine has a stamp. Open your hood and look to the left of your exhaust heat shield about 1/2 down the block. Follow the seam where the transmission meets the block. You will find a stamp that will say B20 something.
