One good way to get more familiar with your car (and cars in general) is to get a maintenance schedule for your car and look into what preventative maintenance is coming up. It's not the most exciting work, but you'll learn where things are, you'll learn how fluids differ from each other (or IF they differ from each other), and most importantly you'll enhance the longevity of your vehicle since it's work that'll keep your expensive components functioning properly. Don't start with a timing belt or a brake flush, start with oil changes, transmission fluid change, air filter, in-cabin filter, diff fluid change, spark plugs and wires, etc... Take pictures before you start if you'll be removing many pieces, or pieces that require a delicate order like spark plug wires, look for a tutorial on youtube or the DIYs here to get some idea of what you're getting into before you start.

Since you've got a '98, there are a number of parts that are probably shot if they haven't been replaced yet. Check your driver's side lower engine mount, check your trailing arm bushings. The engine mount is a simple job, the trailing arm bushings are more difficult and you may need some special tools. Check your valve lash since these motors are known for burning up exhaust valves. You'll need a valve cover gasket and some gasket maker (also called RTV) to do that job, and a good tutorial to follow. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just google "CR-V valve lash adjustment" and it should clear things up. If you're working on suspension or under-body components, always have a can of PB Blaster or some other rust penetrant handy. Breaking the head off a bolt can make the difference between a 2 hour job and a 5 hour job. Maybe the most important thing is learn how to find good resources! If you don't know what trailing arm bushings are, don't post on here and wait 2 days for someone to reply. Look over the DIYs here, look for Youtube videos and read the comments to see if anyone has contradictions or improvements to the process, check over forums, learn how to search, and if you do need to post for something on here, make the post name useful. If your driver's front window won't work don't make the title "window broken", make it "1998 CR-V Driver's front window goes down but not up". Hope this helps!
