Does anyone know how know if it's possible to change a 98 4x4 into a 2WD?
ECU Change? Wire harness? the rear transaxle to a 2wd? please help...

all i know is that disconnect the prop shaft then your already FWD,...
but if you wanna convert a 4wd autobox into a 2wd standard tranny, you might
wanna look at monkeymagic's thread, i think he already did this convertion, afaik
if its already manual and 2wd... you dont have to replace the ecu!

2wds were never available as a manual, only 4wd.

Op, remove rear driveshaft, that's about it.

the rear transaxle will burn out without oil? should I replace that & rear axles?

Just to clarify... Are you looking to make it rear wheel drive only? if so its virtually impossible, unless you did a motor swap with a real rear end that is meant to constantly power a vehicle. But if you are going for Front wheel drive, remove the rear prop shaft and rear end and axles. There is a bearing that needs to be used or something like that in the rear hubs. I saw something about it in this thread.

If you are sure you want to go FWD you could FOR SURE make money off of it. Take all of the RWD stuff out, swap the transmission for a 94-01 Integra LS/GSR transmission. All of those RWD parts will go for a pretty penny on here! And no, you will not need to do anything with the ecu.

Remove the driveshaft, remove rear differential, remove half-shafts, and - this is important!!! - install stub-axles in the rear hubs (or your hub will separate itself from the bearing). Done.

I personally used nuts/bolts/washers since I had already thrown out my old rusty axles...

You can take your stock axles apart and just use the end if you like (maybe that's what he means by stub axles)...

#44 on the diagram. The RT4WD and 2WD rear trailing arms are the same.

Instead of taking apart a good axle, you could probably find these at a salvage yard.

I believe that is a breather tube for the diff.

You should be able to either leave it or remove it.

also I should make sure I asked clearly again, I'm keeping my my b20 engine & changing my 4x4 auto tranny to a 2wd b20 auto tranny. so the ECU should be fine with the 2wd tranny?

Just curious, but why are people wanting to convert a 4 wheel drive SUV to 2 wheel drive? People convert their Civics to 4 wheel drive to get more power to the ground. Plus on a truck it's worthless without 4 wheel drive.

I can't find a 4x4 anywhere in my area...The ones I found are $900- 1000 so I got this 2wd for 400

Ours is changed because here in Texas we don't need 4WD for anything other than off roading. Since this is the wife's car it won't be going there, and the issue about power is a moot point because she is not trying to race anybody. Also, the benefits of better MPGs and less weight outweigh to drawbacks of no 4WD.

yea everything that has been posted so far is on point.

i want to add that the rt4wd system is 100% mechanical so the ecu's between a 4wd and 2wd are the same.

and to the OP, you dont HAVE to install a 2wd transmission....just removing the rear end and driveline will be all that needs done.

i feel you....
i almost jumped into a 2wd tranny last month...but i just kept on looking, luckily
i found one, i still have the same lag or stuttering but its driving better than my
former tranny.. i guess i gotta observe it still...

ran into a couple of problems
L bracket is different than each other (got it though)

The biggest problem is the 4x4 tranny shift cable is different also, I mite need to buy a 2WD cable & replace it or I might get to work it to fiv.. ANY Suggestions??

why again do you need the 2wd transmission? i see no advantage there...once you remove the driveline, they function exactly the same.

My original 4x4 tranny is done.....To hard to come across a 4x4 for a decent price...
