Default 2002 CR-V speedometer acting weird

on our way back home from a party, my girlfriend's CRV's speedo started acting weird
As we were cruising at a steady speed, the speedo needle started slowly climbing its way to and past 120mph and staying stuck at the end of its travel. Even when we stopped, the needle stayed there and wouldn't move at all until we got to doing highway speeds, at which point it read ~110mph. Going slower got it back to 120+
Hitting spiritedly the dash did nothing to fix this problem

Is this a common CR-V problem? what could be the concern? If it is a speed sensor, would the tach stop working too?
1)the odometer and tachometer are working 100% fine
2) this is an all of a sudden problem....It never at all happened before

I know this video shows how to remove the cluster in case I need to fix something inside

thanks for any help

no answer?

oh well

seems like the 02-04 and 05-06 CRV have different cluster from the same body style

will the later 05-06 cluster work/plu-in to the earlier 02-04?

Just go to a local junk yard and pick up a new cluster for $30-$40
