i ahve a 91 hatch with a dohc zc, and zc tranny, i was wonderign what type of axles do i need for it?

Re: zc axles (cpuff)

you need either ZC axles, or custom units from Marty @ Raxles, or swap the side gears in the ZC diff and use DX/Si axles and axle seals.

Tyson 10-26-2006 10:02 PM

Re: zc axles (Mista Bone)

marty quoted me like $280 for his custom zc axles. thats probably not the right number, but it was enough for me not to consider it for my project. sold the hybrid tranny and intermediate shaft to SiRay anyway.

but i will vouch for marty and the quality of raxles anyday.

i hate when ppl just say "wrong."

im not going to say one way or the other, since i havent proceeded with my zc tranny project, but i would take jli_crx's advice anyday.

and wtf, "side gears"? lets just call it a differential...

he doesn't mean the differential, he means the side gears.

it's been documented that 90-93 axles do not work properly with this setup. One of the 90-93 axles works.

What? you expect me to answer instead of saying wrong? Do you expect me to search and place the link in here? The answer has been documented on several forums. HT, d-series, thezcr, etc. The OP should already be searching for this, yet he shows no signs of it.

Re: zc axles (Bense)

i see a lot more "documentation" that integra axles work fine. just take the hub ring out. sometimes i do hear about ppl with lowering issues (or maybe stock height.) but like i said, im not commenting either way since i havent done it myself. but i know jli has a lot of experience (as well as you and chuck) on this subject.

what do i expect? an explanation why its wrong. maybe a link to the many documents showing its wrong.

and really, im open to learning. whats side gears mean? how are the gears in the diff removeable and interchangeable?

the side gears are the differential gears that the axles fit into - splined on the inside - remove the pin that goes thru the pinion gears and all of the gears just fall right out - you can swap the side gears from DX/Si/LX/EX/HF into the ZC carrier and use the stock axles - you cannot, however, swap the side gears from the ZC into the DX/Si/LX/EX/HF carrier to use the larger axles - the hole in the carrier that the axles go thru is too small - the ZC carrier is not the same as all of the rest - having done around 40 DOHC ZC swaps with about half of them with the ZC transmission, i can tell you for a fact that the 90-93 Integra axles work perfectly - we have purchased complete ZC swaps that came with the JDM axles and have measured the axles and compared them with the 90-93 Integra axles and they are dimensionally the same - 86-89 Integra axles are shorter - we have had people come to us saying they bought 90-93 Integra axles and the axle on the driver's side was too long - in every case, they either had two passenger side axles or had the axles switched from side to side - there is a right and a left side axle and they only work one way

How is he wrong? '90-93 Integra axles work perfectly fine with the ZC diff and intermediate shaft in an EF.

What sort of problems have been encountered? I haven't seen or heard of any. An H-T search indicates that '90-93 Integra axles are the proper axles to use with the ZC trans.

90-93 integra axles(non abs) and zc intermediate shaft on my hatch. works perfect

Re: zc axles (jlicrx)

i see now. thanks.

total rhetorical question, wouldnt it simply be easier to just switch carriers completely anyway???? wtf, just unzip the reverse threaded bolts and switch drive gears and be done with it if youre going thru that effort.... just to use stock axles. why would you want the carrier opening to be mismatched with the axles youre using. how is that a better solution...

Bense 10-27-2006 08:37 AM

thats assuming that you have a ex/si trans to get parts from. you can pull side gears from a dx/std diff.

Tyson 10-27-2006 08:38 AM

Re: (Bense)

carriers are different between DX and Si? (not a rhetorical)

CRX1.4DualCarb 10-27-2006 03:20 PM

From what jilicrx has told me (this guy knows it!) they are different. The standart (dx/hf?) carriers have a smaller splined hole by 2mm.

So.. You could swap carriers and use standart axles but wouldn't be able to use the intermidiate shaft (half-shaft) that is very good in eleminating torque-steer. The Half-shaft splines that go inside the carrier are 2mm wider, just like the teg and zc axle splines.

Tyson 10-27-2006 03:40 PM

Re: (CRX1.4DualCarb)

hmmmmm wait a sec. arent Si and DX axles interchangeable???

Bense 10-27-2006 04:11 PM

Re: (Tyson)

zc case is the same case as an si case.

si/zc case = big bearing
dx/lx/hf/std case = small bearing

dx trans differential bearing = 72x35x17
si trans differential bearing = 80x40x18

inner diameter of DX diff bearing = 35mm
inner diameter of Si/ZC diff bearing = 40mm

can't use the dx/std carrier because it's 5mm too small for the zc/si bearings

solution? use side gears from dx diff in zc diff and run stock axles w/o the halfshaft. if you're worried about torque steer, get an LSD.

################################################

zc diff = si diff w/ cable b-series side gears

90-93 teg splines may fit the zc diff w/ halfshaft, but think about the placement of the D trans in the chassis compared to the placement of the B trans in the chassis.

#################################################
So then the decision here is based on the goal of eliminating tq steer. 2 choices

1. get custom axles and run the midshaft ~$340ish
2. get an obx lsd and get it working for ~$400

spend $60 more and get an LSD.

Yes, they are. Actually, HF/STD axles are the same on the diff end as Si/DX axles, so they are all interchangeable as far as the diff goes (the hub end is a different story).

I'm not quite sure what he is talking about.

Not all Si transmissions have 40mm carrier bearings - some of them use the 35mm bearings. Talk to Quaife if you don't believe me.

Dude, '90-93 Integra axles work fine with the ZC trans. There are hundreds if not thousands of people using this setup with no apparent problems.
