Y8 mini me ----->obd 1; what distributor to use???
currently running obd0 wanting to convert to obd1
I have a y8 head so the 92-95 distributors will not bolt up..
can i use my current distributor? or will i need a SOHC obd2 distributor?
are all SOHC obd2 distributors the same?

if thats the case then why cant i use my obd0 distributor
is there a big difference internally? will it be as simple as swaping out ignition module and coil?

"all you need is the houseing from a obdII and obdI internals"
That's the worse idea I have ever heard.
What you use it a distributor from the 92-95 CX/VX/or DX. They will all bolt CORRECTLY to your Y8 head and will send the CORRECT signal to the OBD1 ECU. The 92-95 Si distributor will work as well, but will need to be modified to bolt to the Y8 head.

Convert the car to obd1 and run the obdII distributor (d16y8). I know it works cause that is what i am running in my car right now, and 89y49 was as well.... before his car was totalled.
Hell i am using the y8 injectors as well with the p28 ecu.....
Good luck dood.

I am working on a something just like this. It is a d15 block, d16y8 head, and d16z6 intake. I am debating making it obd1 with the z6 computer. How hard is this and what dizzy will i use? I just moved from tampa and live in orlando now.

Re: Y8 mini me ----->obd 1; what distributor to use??? (4potnick)
highly recomment converting to obd1...will save you hours and hours of tuning and problems with fuel/ignition/vtec
the amount you spend on vtec activation and fuel/timing adj will be the same as converting to obd1 and running p28
trust me i went thru the first route already ...not fun
the conversion is really not that difficult..hardest part is finding plugs and pins
if your handy with a soldering iron you will have no problems
the dizzy i am still tryin to find out....anyone?

Re: Y8 mini me ----->obd 1; what distributor to use??? (VTeC4TheChildren)
That's the WRONG bible. That is for a Z6 head. That's not a Y8 head.
The Y8 head has the same distributor screw pattern as the D16A6. You can use a Z6 Si distributor but it needs to be modified. It's modified the OPPOSITE way that the 4th gen car's do a mini-me. They take an A6 dizzy and an A6 ECU, BUT on a Z6 head. They have notch the dizzy so it can be rotated for timing.
Now, knowing that the Y8 and A6 patterns are the same and the Z6 is different you have to look at more options. The CX/VX/DX are also the same pattern as the Y8 and A6. You ask "well, why can't I use my A6 dizzy?" Well, the A6 dizzy is OBD0 and sends a DIFFERENT signal to the ECU than the OBD1 ECU can read. So, if you use the OBD1 ECU you logically need an OBD1 distributor. CX/VX/DX are all OBD1 and bolt to the Y8 head.
Taaaa daaaa... do it.

Re: Y8 mini me ----->obd 1; what distributor to use??? (VTeC4TheChildren)
I will give you a hint on this. I usually just use the 96-EX motors in OBD0 cars and use the stock si dist and use the Zdyne !wire to activate VTEC. The cars run real well and are factory looking. If you are hard pressed to convert to OBD 1 then as for the dist you can use a 92-95 Civic DX or cx dist and that bolts onto the head and plugs into the OBD 1 harness. good luck

Re: Y8 mini me ----->obd 1; what distributor to use??? (D16z6turbs)
for the price of Zdyne one wire i could convert to obd1 and run the proper ecu...
why should i run pm6 and not have the maps for vtec..even with everything i need to tune it VAFC/Fields it will still not be better than running the proper ecu....
...another plus is i will be able to use Hondata. For 300 you cant beat that. I live close to John of Secret Services who is HOndata tuning specialist..so advanced tuning will not be difficult
...if i ever decide to go twin cam ..everything will be there and ready
OBD1 a much BETTER way to go than OBD0 w/ vtec activation switch
THe bible i was refering to was for OBD1 conversion..i kno its for z6 but the wiring set up is the same
Thanks for all the help guys...

Re: Y8 mini me ----->obd 1; what distributor to use??? (VTeC4TheChildren)
The Zdyne One-Wire conversion not only adds the VTEC function, it also add's in the proper fuel/timing maps - either Z6, or Y8 maps. (depending on the head of course)
The converted ECU also recognizes the oil pressure, and engine temp before activating VTEC. So the conversion is very much like putting in the ECU that came with the vtec motor. BUT, VSS functions are disabled - meaning VTEC will activate (given the proper pressure & temp) at the desired RPM no matter how fast you are going.
The Zdyne ECU can also have the vtec activation RPM point adjusted.
IMO, the Zdyne is a little better than going with the OBD-1 ECU.
But the best would still be a VAFC - If you have a dyno to tune your car.
I'm going for the Zydne conversion....

Re: Y8 mini me ----->obd 1; what distributor to use??? (MrTodd)
how much is the Zdyne one wire?
you can find p28 for 125-150 and honda 300 and never have a single worry again.
the zydne you would have to send back if you were to change to another motor while hondata could just be retuned easilty and effectily...its all in the tuner
VAFC is just a signal modifier....with hondata you will get way more power and uses out of your ecu
The main reason i will be going hondata is becasue i have readily access to a dyno and one damn good hondata tuner.

I see.... Zdyne costs $320 [US] with a core deposit. (ouch for me)
In your case, you're obviously better off with the Hondata - this way you'll have more options for tuning in the long run.
Good Luck!

I think...if I read that correctly, it states that you cant run the OBd0 injectors. You can use the injectors but must keep the resistor box. Likewise on your EF cars that want to run the OBd1/2 injectors, you must remove the resistor box.

Re: Y8 mini me ----->obd 1; what distributor to use??? (Blown90hatcH)
Guys, I just bought a y8 head for mini me and was planning on using the a6 dizzy and ecu, but what would it take to convert to obd-1 or 2, and what is the reason for doing so?

Re: Y8 mini me ----->obd 1; what distributor to use??? (bleebdat)
BUY A OBD2 Y8 DISTRIBUTOR and a P28 ecu. You can use obd1 or obd2 injectors. This way you dont have to ghetto rig the distributor, and you are running a VTEC ecu and you know it is getting the correct fuel/air ratio.
Trust me, it works just fine this way. Oh yeah and if you dont want to build the conversion harness yourself, word has it that blown90hatch makes em and sells em.
Plus he is really helpful when you are doing your swap I must have bugged him about 10 times with silly questions.
Edit Vtec4TheChildren, what part of tampa are you in? I am over in new port richey, and I go to usf..... If you need any help, let me know. I have a complete y8 in my 91 crx si.

I'm telling you, for the price of the OBD-1 ECU, then the Y8 Dizzy, plus the newer injectors, and the wiring, your gonna be paying at least the same price as the Zdyne One-wire conversion!!
Did you guys not read my previous post? By using the Zdyne conversion, you'll have the Y8 fuel/timing maps! Not the weaker Z6 ones! (i know, barely weaker..)
In addition to that, VSS is disabled! VTEC will always kick in at the desired RPM! No matter how fast you're going!
I dunno about you guys, but the Zdyne deal not only sounds easy, but very effective to me. Plus there is virtually no hassle - just plug in the new ECU, plug in the VTEC wiring and you're set!

MrTodd, what does the Zdyne replace, does it act as the ecu or is it a piggy back, and can it be tuned etc... I will be going to their site in a sec, but you have me interested.
