Rust.

I handed the project off to a really awesome painter, and moved 2000miles away. So the future pictures and work are from him.

Does anyone know which online sites I can get a stock bumper cover, and the metal bumper bar cheapest? I tried oembumpers.com but they ended up not having it.

I have more pictures coming soon I guess.

But again, does anyone know which online sites I can get a stock bumper cover, and the metal bumper bar cheapest? I tried oembumpers.com but they ended up not having it.

I'd paint your new side moldings if I were you. I know it sounds asinine but I bought brand new side moldings (all 6 pieces) from Honda a couple years back and they did this after not even a year:

It's not just that they're faded, they literally crumble in your hands if you run your finger across them and as you can see somehow crumbled themselves those flakey areas. Every new piece except the slightly rubberized door sections on my car did this. I'm guessing the plastic somehow decomposed for lack of a better word sitting around in warehouses for 20+ years, then being exposed to sun produced the above.

I ended up sanding them as best I could and painting them. It was kind of too late though because I couldn't really completely sand out that flakey look in spots.

Ooh that's sucks I've always wondered about the n.o.s. (New old stock) honda parts. Its the same with plastics and molding for old Datsuns. As soon as it hits sunlight its dies out. Like a vampire.

Have u tried priming the moldings first? Then painting? Works for me!

Finally found rear bumper covers

nationalautobody.com had three 90-91 oem style bumper covers in stock for $125 each. The freight was $205 though.

I seriously spent days looks for that.

What did you use to paint the trim? I found the item pictured.

Well yes of course I primed them first. I had no paint adherence issues. The problem is, like I said, not just that they faded, it's that they had a crumbled texture. And no amount of prep seemed to help because sanding off the top "layer" just revealed another layer underneath equally as crumbly and grainy, almost like its coated in a layer of sand that you can't get smooth no matter what, which resulted in a not so great outcome.

I ended up having to paint multiple layers and sand in between each one to try to build the paint up smooth to hide the grainy texture, but it still didn't come out flawless. It's really a bummer because I was so thrilled to hunt down/piece together a full brand new molding set from various dealers, then to just have them crap out was not amusing. They look decent enough now though, you probably couldn't tell unless you were right up on them. But it still bugs me

I used Duplicolor trim paint, but for no particular reason other than that's what I had enough leftover to use. I've used Duplicolor trim paint and the Plastikote stuff over the years and have had good experiences with all of them (of course I wet sand everything and wipe them down good with wax/tar/grease remover before paint). They all dry quick and spray on nice and evenly.

I've used them on my window trim and bumpers and cowl and wiper arms and door handles. Can't remember which brand on which parts but they all seem about the same to me other than just small differences in color/shade. Painting all that stuff after your paint job really makes a difference. Nothing ages a car aesthetically more than faded trim and other parts (and yellow'd headlights on newer cars).

@James: Where do you live, and what kind of conditions were you car in? I am just curious if you live somewhere hot like arizona and your trim was constantly in the sun.

I live in Dallas, and you're correct I have no doubt the sun caused it. But that still isn't the entire reason, I mean the original moldings didn't even do that crumbling crap in 20+ years of Texas sun, they just faded. Then the new ones crumble in 9-10 months?

But yeah if you're in a cooler climate I'm sure they won't deteriorate as fast, but I still wouldn't be surprised if it happens within a few years

Exhaust

I am pretty excited. I am almost done with ordering parts. I just ordered mandrelexhaustsystems.com's 2.5 inch stainless kit, with Magnaflow parts. I orderd the spun cat, 18 inch resonator, 22 inch muffler with duel outlets, tips, stainless hangers, etc.

I think it will work well with the stock 98 spec type R headers.

Mugen MR5

Just won a set of Mugen MR5s off of ebay. Missing caps and a few bolts. They seemed too cheap to pass up. So now I have a brand new set of Rota JMags, and a set or MR5s. I don't know what I got my self into.

Thanks.

Does anyone think that exhaust is too close to the bumper? I was looking for the bumper heat shields, but couldn't find any for the CRX.

It looks close, but is probably ok. You can always bend the hanger and adjust the rubber piece. I would try to go right just a little. Is everything bolted up and running? I notice a few things undone like the battery.
