Re: (MidoriEK4)
whats if i use a 88-89 cluster with the 88-89 dash harness on my 90 crx and just tap into the rest of the wires to make the hazards and dimmer work?

Re: (benn2k)
Sorry to hijack thread, but rather than start a new one: I'm putting in a 90 Civic Si dash into my 88 std, and I was wondering if the new plugs for the guage cluster (90-91 style) directly depin to my 88 plugs?

im having a similar issue with my 89 dx. I have an 89 si cluster and 89 main harness but the cluster harness is definately not a 88-89 its 90-91. The plug the goes to the female end to the tails rear turns...etc.....are different sizes and one has about 4-6 more wires.

Okay guys.
So basically, the EF's had the same front end completely. The dash, physically, is the exact same from 88-89, 90-91.
The problems you come across is if you're going from any harness to an Si. It won't plug into the fuse box, DX to an Si or vice versa.
The differences between 88-89 and 90-91 are as follows...
Dimmer Switch
88-89 has a relay built into the switch
90-91 has an external relay, mounted behind the steering column
So, you'd have to remove the relay and plug the 88-89 switch in. Some splicing required.
Otherwise, same idea for adding the relay. It's easy to figure out.
Hazard Switch
88-89 is built into the steering column
90-91 is built into the cluster hood
There is only 5 wires on the 88-89 switch, 8 or 10 on the 90-91 switch. I've never installed the 90-91 switch, but, you only ever need those 5 wires from the 88-89 harness anyways...
Defog Switch
88-89 is a large rectangle, can also go in the spare switch spots below and to either side of the steering wheel
90-91 is a rounded, smaller switch. Same size as the 90-91 hazard switch.
There's just some splicing, getting the proper pigtail to the proper harness. No messing with relays or anything else really.
Swapping 88-89 to 90-91 clusters...
That's a totally different, and much more lengthy process.
You need those 3 switches, and the matching cluster hood.
There's quite a few write-ups around.
That's the only wiring changes as far as I can tell, and, the 90-91 has a 'brain' that turns off the cigarette lighter when the car is off.
IF you need more help... just ask.
