Default TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION

WELL I JUST BOUGHT A USED TRANSSMISION FOR MY 91 CIVIC AND WHEN I WENT TO GO PUT IT IN THE SPLINES DIDNT LINE UP, SO I CALLED THE PEOPLE THAT SOLD ME MY CLUTCH AND THEY SAID IT HAD TO BE A 21 SPLINE INSTEAD OF THE 20 SPLINE, SO WHAT MY QUESTION IS, WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN THE TWO TRANNYS, IM AFRAID THAT IT MIGHT BE A 4 SPEED OUT OF THE 88 CIVIC. IF IT IS CAN I GET MY TRANNY GUY TO TAKE THE DIFFERENTIAL OUT OF THE GOOD TRANNY AND PUT IT IN THE OLD ONE WITH THE BAD DIFFERENTIAL. WHAT I WANT IS THE 5 SPEED TRANNY. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRICIATED.

The L3 codes mean diddly. The 21 spline transmission shows that is from an 88 model, which one specifically is left up to positive gear identification or through further stamp identification. If you are so worried that it could be a four speed just shift it by hand or open it up. Hell, if you open it up it'd be a good lesson on how to count teeth on the countershaft / final.

OK YEA IT IS A 4 SPEED TRANNY. NOW WILL I BE ABLE TO TAKE THE DIFFERENTIAL OUT OF THAT ONE AND PUT IT IN MY 5 SPEED TRANNY. THEY SHOULD BE THE SAME RIGHT?

Well just to give you guys an update on my tranny... I went to my guy this morning and we took the old tranny apart and found that is was beyond repair. Not only was the differential completely jacked up so was 5th gear. So then we took apart the new one i just bought to see if we could take some of the parts off it to fix to it but once we opened it we saw it was a 5 speed and that it was in perfect condition. So what im doing now is i bought the 21 spline clutch disk for my good tranny (only $25 plus shipping) and im just gonna use that good tranny. And just so you know its not easy swapping out differentials without someone that knows what their doing. Too many little parts and thiers a little trick to it that i didnt really understand. But now i know how to break in half the tranny and count my gears. (good thing to know)
