ticking noise, what should i do from here
I recently started hearing a noticeably loud ticking noise in my motor. I have a b18c1 in a hatchback ef. Compression test showed 210 in every cylinder. I applied air to the cylinders each at tdc and heard air in the throttle body for every cylinder but more so in no1. My guess was a burned valve so I took the head off. And I tested the valves by filling the intake and exhaust ports wit coolant and spraying air to the valve seats and only 2 out of 16 leaked. So now my guess is the valves are good? or could those slight leaks be causing the tick?

Have you adjusted your valves recently. That is what I would have checked first instead of ripping the head off

Most likely it is your lost motion assemblies (LMAs). It is a very common problem for B-series engines.
Lucky for you, they are in the head, and now would be a good time to replace them since you took the head off.

my guess would also be lmas could be worn down so spring has play instead of being tight causing a ticking noise...ive seen it before here at my boys shop

I pushed down on all the lma's with my finger a couple times each and they all spring back freely without sticking. The head is a 99 also so I dont think those are bad.

A lot of things happen when you're spinning at 5-8K rpm. Also when things heat up they can get sticky. I'm sure it's a fairly cheap thing to replace and since 3 or 4 people have seen it first hand and suggest it, I would listen.
Also a bent, burned, or warped valve won't cause a ticking noise. Valve lash out of adjustment, injectors, rod knock, or the LMA's will cause a ticking noise, so don't run down the wrong path just because it doesn't make sense to you at the time.

Yea I hear you. The noise occured at idle on startup and when warm. I found the lma's for 22.00 a piece which isnt too cheap considering I need 8. But most likely ill change them.

Re: ticking noise, what should i do from here
didn't someone figure out how to use h22 lma's with a certain size washer to replace the b series lma's? the h22 lma's ended up being like half price..
edit: https://honda-tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2312727 looks like honda themselves switched to the h22 style, and just shimmed them to work in the b head. probably kept the price the same though..

i pushed them to what felt like the most i could have pushed them and none seemed to stick. What do you guys think about the coolant leaking out of the valves at the seats when i put coolant in the ports?

Re: ticking noise, what should i do from here
I just came across this thread because my motor just started ticking at idle and it is in the head. I can hear it clearer when I put my ear closer to the head. I did an oil change and valve adjustment, they were in spec and nothing seemed out of place or worn...
My motor is fairly fresh rebuild and no problems for the last 21k miles... Rod knock seems unlikely, but still a possibility. I am leaning toward injectors or LMA's...
I do not know much of LMA's to justify it is them nor injectors being bad.
Any help would be great to solve, and fix this issue.
