Swapping a fuel pump
 

Got a '91 Si with a bad fuel pump. I was wondering if dropping the tank is a requirement or if I can get to everything from under the seats. It's currently sitting on the street with a full tank of gas and I can't afford to pay a mechanic to deal with it. My Prelude puked out on me today (same issue) so I need to get the Si back up and running. I know that you can swap the Prelude fuel pump from the trunk, but I'm looking to get rid of that car. Any advice on the Si is greatly appreciated.

Just pop the back seat bottom cushion and it's right there in the middle.

Awesome, that will make things so much simpler. I appreciate it. I had been told by another source that I would have to drop the tank. I do have a Haynes manual but it's a little vague in its instructions. Any recommendations for potentially better service manuals? This car has been sitting for like a month and a half now. Finally conjured up enough to buy the pump and a new strainer. I'm very relieved to know that I don't have to drop that damn tank. I absolutely have to have a car for my job, so I'm borderline shitting frisbees here.

Are you freaking serious? You do have to drop the tank to replace the pump on the EF. What you see under the seat cushion is not the pump, but just the metering unit.

OP, there's a drain plug on your Si gas tank, drain the fuel and drop the tank. The pump is actually toward the back of the tank, at the high point. You will need to disconnect about 4 rubber hoses under the car, unbolt a couple bolts to the hardline, drop the tank by removing the 2 straps, remove the banjo bolt and remove the pump. You'll probably have to replace the rubber gasket and also the crush washer on that banjo bolt. If you have a friend to help, it'll be a half day job. If not, you can use another small jack to help lower and raise the tank. Gotta empty it first though.

Aww, my hopes were raised and then dashed to pieces. Either way, gotta get it done. Thanks for the assistance, gentlemen. It would be a hell of a lot easier to work on if it wasn't sitting in the street. A narrow street with fairly soft pavement at that. Jack stands sink in about 3/4 of an inch or so, as do the wheels of my floor jack. Sucks.

yeah its in the middle ish side of the gas tank. ive taken mine out b4 an swapped my gas tank for a new one. it isnt hard. ^^
