Default STD/DX/LX Gauge Cluster Swap to Si Cluster

Hey guys, today I want to help out some people out there that need help. Hopefully I’ll be doing other threads that’ll help someone at least…

In other words I’ll get on to what I’m going to show all of you (with pictures to ease any pain/confusion, cause I’m not lazy ;P)

I’m going to show you how to swap your STD, DX, or LX gauge clusters to a Si cluster. (The pictures are from my ’91 Civic HB DX)

I forgot to take pictures of the beginning of the taking apart, sorry! But it’s easy to follow my steps.

First you have to take out the TWO(2) screws (total of FOUR(4) screws) on the BOTTOM & TOP of the speedometer cover.
(Left Bottom)

(Right Bottom)

With a small( and I mean small…) flat head screw driver, take off both covers/caps that cover the TOP TWO(2) screws.

Now that these are loose, there are THREE(3) wires that are attached to the speedometer cover. They’re these from left to right. Back window defroster, Light dimmer, and Emergency light switch. Simply unhook them and then….

It should look like this.

There are FOUR(4) screws that keep the speedometer in place. Take the screws out so that the speedometer is free.

(Left Side)

(Right Side)

Now that the speedometer is free, take out all the wires that are plugged in. After so, then it should look like this. They are numbered to keep track of what they are (your welcome).

(Back of cover)

(Back of Speedometer)

(Your new cool looking dash…)

Now that that is done, simply do the reverse because it’s just plug in and play!

(Before Cover On)

(With Cover On)

Thanks for your time! Hope this helps someone!

Well when you get one I guess now you know how to install it...
GL finding one, or go to your local Junkyard. You'd be amazed at what they have.

Nice and simple. Well written, with good visual instructions. Thank you.

Question - For people changing their 88-89 cluster to 90-91 cluster. What are you doing with the emergency flashers?

The reason I ask it due to the fact they are in two different locations. The 88-89 is on top of the steering column behind the steering wheel. The 90-91 is located on the front, right, side of the cluster.

Thanks.

I just left the button there with nothing connected to it. I thought it would be fun to turn it into an engine start button, so I might do that one day.

The 88-89 hazard connector is different from the 90-91 hazard connector, but the wire colors are the same. The 90-91 also has two illumination wires that the 88-91 cable does not have. I got a 90-91 pigtail from a junkyard car, and soldered it in to the 88/89 hazard cable to extend it long enough to reach the 90-91 switch location. Then I spliced the RED and RED/BLK illumination wires into the same color wires coming from the dimmer control on the other side of the cluster.

Don't forget that the 88-89 and the 90-91 clusters have very different pinouts on the two main cluster cable connectors, so a bunch of connector repinning needs to be done there too.
