Default sohc zc problem, timing belt?

so me and a friend finished getting his sohc zc into his 88 dx, it ran fine for like 2 min, he went to his house, which is like 1/4 mile from mine. then we meet at the bottom of his street and drive for like 30 seconds and all of a sudden his car stalls, i wasnt in hte car, i was behind him, there was no smoke or anything, he said there was a grinding noise. he coasts to a stop and we tried starting it for like a good minute. i check the fuel, replaced the dizzy, all that. when you try to crank it it will turn over, and like then every like 5 or 6 cranks it will like try to start, i dont know how to describe it. we also checked the belt, its still on, but i dont know if it skipped or what? what can i do to check if its the belt, or what other solution is there. and remeber it ran for like 5 minutes, then stopped, no warning or smoke. and this is suppse to be his daily so if someone has any ideas? thanks

sounds like it jumped time. did you turn the motor over all the way already? were any teeth missing off the timing belt? those would be the things i would check first. similar thying happened to me except i was going 80 on an onramp. wasnt cool at all. Most common reason for jumping time is faulty water pump.....you did replace that when you did the swap right? and the timing belt? well i hope so

set it to TDC see it its on time. Check the rotor on the distributor and see if its not 180 off.
