Default signs of a bad distributor?

My 89 crx si died on the road. It fired up after letting it sit for a while, but the signs before were irregular idleing and at first the car sputters at 3-4k rpm. If I floor it in that range it will die out almost every time. Once the car is warmed up it runs fine usually, but the other day I was stopped in traffic and the rpm just suddenly dropped to zero and I couldnt restart the car for a while.

I resoldiered the main relay a while ago because I had start up problems after the car was turned off then turned on again and that fixed the problem. My question is, does the above scenerio look like a bad dizzy? One of my friends said to try replacing the cap and wires first. I pulled the plugs and one of them was wet .

bad dizzy = no spark... they are a pretty simple unit and usually only the ignitor or coil fails, which ive never heard acting the way you decribe your car acting.
the bearings fail too... pop it off and make sure it spins freely (dont forget to mark its postion prior so you dont need to reset your timing)
is your cars engine stock?

You might also check to see that the rotor has not fallen off the dizzy shaft.
This happened to me before and it acted exactly the way you described.
Check to see that the set-screw on the rotor didnt fall off.
Let me know what you find.
Good luck!!!

are you throwing any codes? because i had a code 9 a while ago for the tdc/cyl sensor in the distributor, and it caused stumbling around 3-4k..

something else to look into is the ignition switch for the dying and cutting out.

both the ignition switch and the code 9 tdc/cyl sensor tests can be found in a helms or online if you look. test them before you buy new parts.

bad dizy bearing always shows itself when the car is cold. You'll see it missing a bit and your overall MPG will be down. In the summer it may work for a while but wait till it gets cold.
When bad enough, it makes noises and when it get's really bad, you may even have your timing belt skip few teeth.
sound like you igniter may be the culprit. HTH

I have to just pop in and ask if you are getting fuel. I've run myself ragged looking at electricals only to find a short in the wire right at the fuel pump itself, especially after doing custom electrical work as you've done, I'd personally make sure you've still got consistent power to your pump, good grounds everywhere, and good fuel pressure. How old is the fuel filter? A replacement may be due anyway, a good enough place to start? It couldn't hurt.

Good luck!

Woops, I missed the comment about the wet plug. If it is wet with coolant, you may be looking at a head gasket issue. Check for mixing and foaming in the oil and leaks out the exhaust. Vac leaks are another obvious one to check out. I'm still going with fuel first, especially cutting out at 3-4 K.

problem fixed, i swapped out the spark plug cables (went with ngk's), distributor cap and rotor. Fired right up and then took it for a ride, no more rough spots at the 3-4 k rpms! Hopefully the problem is fixed permanantly, I'm guessing maybe the cable was bad in cylinder three since that was the one with the wet plug? At any rate, the whole thing ran me like sixty bucks in parts and I'm happy.

Thanks again guys.

Checking in 2024 🤣 I’m having the same issues on 1992 Accord Coupe 5 Speed. The rpms died randomly the other while I was driving, but all the electronics were fine. I pulled over, waited a minute and it started back up and I got it home. A week later I take it out and it died as I pulled into a parking spot at the store. I go into the store come out it turns on. I get about a mile down the road and it dies in the left turn lane as I’m waiting for it to turn. Now it cranks but won’t start. Had to push it home and ruin my new hat 🥲.
