Default Power mirrors on a CRX: How to make it a reality......

While Folding JDM mirrors are the rage....they are hard to come by ( not to mention $$$$ ). To add salt to the wound....the passenger mirror was an option for the REX and EF. So like many I went searching for a mirror at the junkyards. No such luck.....it was either gone or they wanted almost as much as Honda wanted for a new one On an outing to the yards...I came across an idea: Why not use Civic LX power mirrors...it should work. Well I scored a set of mirrors and switch for $35.00...Sweet Enough babbling for now...on to the tech info.

Parts:
power mirrors from 88-91 civic LX sedan ( mine was from a '90)
the mirror switch ( I fits in the hole to the right of the stering wheel)
basic tools....( hammer,screwdriver,drill bit/uni-bit,chisel)
wire, fuse holder,fuse(10 amp) test light tape connectors.

1. Take off door panels and remove CRX mirrors.
2. test fit Civic mirror to door...note where you have to modify mounting holes.
3. mount mirror to door...stick wire plug through hole in center ( 3 wires)
4. route wire harness from plug through plastic tubing into body of vehicle ( if you want to add wire for other upgrades...speakers,doorlocks,etc..now is the time to do it..always plan for upgrades.)
5. on the switch 4 wires will match up to the oem mirrors...the third wire on the mirrors has a white trace...this wire goes to a yellow/white wire on switch.
6. Black/yellow - 12volt...above your fuse panel is a row of plugs...one is ignition another is battery...your choice to use either. This must be a Fused connection.
7. Black/grey spots - chassis ground .....find a good ground point.
8. Add fuse...plug harness into switch and test.
9. Admire your handy work....have a few

Notes...Feel free to share any corrections or additions to this post. My mirrors left and right movement is reversed ( i believe that the motor is reverse polarity so more testing is needed...but its so cool to have what looks like an OEM design)

have fun....

Chuck

Do you have any pics of the finished project. I just want to see how they turn out since the mirrors do not fit prefectly. Any spaces? Would you be able to tell if it wasn't your own car?

Thanks for any input.

Glad to be of help...I'll try to post pics soon ( my digi camera took an unscheduled swim @ a pool party ( darn kids..oh well...U know what this means... Upgrades.. . What is really cool is to have someone ask "So when did CRX's have power mirrors..Oh it must have been a RARE factory option. Now to add power windows and cruse ( added doorlocks already). I guess its time to beef up the altenator.

We can do this....We have the technology....

the doorlocks were just the typical aftermarket alarm acuator type run through relays ( controlled by the security sytem)...I am searching for the best looking switches to mount them somewhere ( maybe BMW or Benz style)...as for windows Im looking at the Electric Life ( bolts to oem window frame and replaces crank altogether ( $$$$) or Spal type ($$)...the window switchs will prob sit on each side of the shifter in the console. As for mounting the lock acuators...on a CRX you can mount them on the door in the grab handle area...perfect fit. ( maybe the civics have the same deal...)

have fun

I originally had Japanese power windows 'till I broke the glass trying to take the glass off. So I also decided to use 4 door mirrors. What I did was take the base off of the factory non- power mirror and exchange it for the power mirror base. That way, the it bolts in perfect and looks perfect. If you notice, the 4 door base does not cover the molding or black strip around the window. I think this makes it look funny.

The three wires that you connect can be switched around untill you find the right combination so everything works in the direction it should.

Thats a very good idea...keep em coming....You are correct in that it is not a direct fit...I had to modify ( enlarge ) 2 of the holes and trim out a little metal to get the mirror to the position i wanted them to be...They look like they belong there. I really wish I had a passenger mirror to start out with.....Naaaawww this is to much fun.

Have fun

I know this is an old post, but i was wondering has anyone taken the mirrors off a 91 lx apart and put the internals into a crx mirror? Any reason why this could'nt work?

How do you take out the pins that hold the swinging brakets inside the mirror out?

Hi
I have a 91 ED9 CRX and the mirrors are manual and they are crushed.
I've already bought the mirrors but they are power mirrors.
I was wondering if there is already harness for that or should i do something about it.
I haven't checked yet.
Thank you
