Default Overheating! EG 1/2 size dual core not good enough? A6 Turbo

Im having some troubles with my car running way to dam hot. On a hot day itll run @ 230 while cruising around in town. The lowest Ive ever seen it go was 190 and that was on a cool night cruising @ 50

The car is an 88 crx si, d16a6 motor with some internals and a fairly sized turbo. My rad probably gets close to no air flow I would assume because of my large intercooler.

But Ive seen many guys running just the eg rads and id assume they had no troubles right?

I pulled my thermostat and have my fan running all the time and I cant keep the temps down. I also put a few washers under the hood to lift the back to vent it but nothing keeps this **** down

I was debating on trying to squeeze back in the stock crx full size rad (which i dont even know if I can do actually) or spend big bucks on a aluminum 1/2 size rad which still might not work

Wha do you suggest?

So is the problem when moving? Or is the problem when you are in traffic?

Have you tried water wetter? This is good stuff http://www.redlineoil.com/products_coolant.asp

Also if you are having problems when in traffic try a pusher fan, if you can fit it, on the front of the radiator. I did that in my 65 Mustang so when I stopped I just flipped the switch and pushed air through the radiator. Also a boat exhaust blower in the engine bay my help get hot air out.

The problem seems to be always, when im moving and its cold out, I seem to be able to just keep it under 200, in traffic or just low speed I seem to hit 230

most of my journeys are small though, so running no thermo makes it take a while to warm up and by then im pretty much there, just prolongs my overheating I suppose

FYI: the area where the hood meets the windshield is a "high pressure" zone. This is area where cars use cowl induction intakes on the hood. If the pressure at the base of the windshield is higher than the under-hood pressure, you may be inadvertently filling your engine bay from the back. This will cause less air flow through the radiator.

On cars that vent the radiator up through the hood, you will notice the outlet is in the middle or front of the hood. This is a good low pressure zone as the air tries to cling to the convex curve of the hood. Perhaps its time for an aftermarket "turbo" hood...

All of this is speculation based on broad generalizations, and can not override actual testing or your personal experience. So if you did notice jacking up the rear of your hood helped with temps, then disregard this post (but let me know)...

I havent noticed a direct difference in temperatures, I know that when i pop my hood its dam hot though, much hotter than my truck.

The weather heere has been jumpy and ive only had the car out for a few days and its mostly at night for some racing

I dunno what to do actually

Im running a 50/50 mix right now

The car got to 230 when I was crusing at 60 today, im switching to a full size rad I think

take your hood off and drive around. also check your timing cause if its off then i think it may also cause this problem

That might be your problem, the coolant is flowing to fast throught the system to transfer any heat

The motor is a complete rebuild, was hot tanked and cleaned.

The car ran mint 190* when it was raining today, so I know its possible for it to run right, just need a lot of things to happen at once lol

I think I may try water wetter but I dont know yet

integra radiator, put fans on front side, make sure to make them pull instead of push fans.

Do I have my fan wired incorrectly?

Ir currently is pushing air through the rad and out the front of the car

Someone just told me it should be pulling air, why is that? Would this cause my problem

yea, thats wrong. you need to switch the wiring.


fan direction ---&gt; radiator | front of car &lt;--- air direction

you see? your trying to push the air from the engine bay outside the front of the car when moving the car is having air rush the opposite idrection.

in my mind it makes sense, I would if I were you move the fan to the front and leave it wired the way it is

or

switch the wires nad have it work as a pull fan.

&lt;---air direction radiator fan|integra radiator

switch the fan like others have said

but 230 water isnt that hot. i'm pretty sure it is the top of the "normal" range on the stock guage, but i might be remembering wrong.

any idea what oil temps are?

i will tell you why.

air is being sucked from around the exhaust manifold because its easier for the air to come from there, then from the front of the car. assuming u have a FMIC in there.

i had the same problem until i made a small shroud separating the front of the rad from the engine bay.

LOL, that would do it...

If you have air pushing in from the front because the vehicles moving, and air pushing out of the front because of the fan, the end result is air going nowhere...

Also, when your sitting at a stop, the fan is blowing hot engine compartment air into the radiator. Not very good for cooling purposes...
