My daily driven 91 dx hatch project

Hi! Im fairly new to honda tech but i've been lurking around the site for some time now. I picked up my 91 dx hatchback about a month ago and it has grown into an obsession. The only things i've done so far are put in new front and back speakers and subs, and painted the rims(not staying red for long). I'd love to get some feedback on what you guys think and what your suggestions are. My plans for this car in order are to install new progress cs-ii coilovers, new tires, fix all body damage and rust, replace interior pieces as needed, dpfi-mpfi swap, d16y8/z6 swap, maybe boost some day :P Here are some pictures of how it sits now!

good start,
id take care of all that rust before it spreads.
mostly in the 1/4 panels, sand it all off, hopefully you don't have to cut any off lol. then spray paint it white, and vacuum it and tuck those power wires for the sub away.

I'd start with the rust and the body work. This car has mismatched trim and bumpers, dents, and rust. I'm not a fan of those rims and definitely not in that color but they would look more presentable if you washed them before you took pics. If you're going to keep that subwoofer setup...at least clean up the wiring and make it look more organized and less thrown together, you have wires everywhere. This thing needs some work but your plans for it sound solid. I just don't think anyone is going to be able to look past the body as it is right now so I would tackle that first.

you need a junk yard run asap :)

firstly make sure your coolant hoses are in good shape, do a tune up (cap rotor plugs wires) and check your belts. timing belts are cheap and easy to do on our cars, you should do the water pump at the same time but in a pinch you can do just the belt for under 40 bux. check the brakes too make sure they work well and have good pads.

get an alarm and some kill switches installed if theft is an issue in your area.

should be able to find seats, trim and fenders no problem at your local pick n pull. the subs look like they bump nice, but pull the trunk carpet off the back seats, run the wiring under the carpet, and mount your amp to the back of the seat. will look MUCH cleaner (this is how my amps are mounted). run it all under the carpet and up behind the blower motor, there's a gromet that isn't used for anything that you can run the wiring through between the shock tower and the fire wall on the passenger side.

as far as body work goes, sand and grind that rust off asap! not sure how to fix the damage by the back window, probably going to need to be pulled and filled.

hit that rear bumper with some white rustoleum or auto paint to match it up.

oh and not sure who told you that's a dx, but your car is actually a base model. 4 speed, black trunk filler, no center shift boot cover, pleather seats, no tach and no cloth inserts on the door panels give it away, still a good car though

Re: My daily driven 91 dx hatch project

It is a dx, the title tells me so :P and it is a 5 speed manual not a 4. I just put in an si cluster from a crx today so i have a tach now! I started doing some body work to fix the rust also. I am going the fiberglass route and its going better then expected but I have a lot of work ahead of me. I also started to clean up my thrown together subwoofer install! Thanks for the positive encouragement guys! More progress pictures soon

You can't just cover rust with fiberglass. You have to cut out all the old rust and weld in new panels. If you put fiberglass over it, it will just start decaying underneath the fiberglass.

Bodywork sucks. I would just keep that car as a a beater and go find a rust-free car in the South.

I am cutting out ALL the rust and replacing the cut out area with fiberglass. Body work does suck but I know ill be proud of it when I'm done.

URGENT WTB! I need a set of 15 inch wheels and tires, Im looking for a set of Drag dr-20 or Dr-16 but i will take anything decent looking. I blew a tire and it caused the rim to bend. So unless you guys want me to drive a chevy cavalier im gonna need some new wheels ASAP! Thanks

New wheels and tires ordered, still waiting on suspension! I can get pictures of the body work that's getting done if anyone is interested.
