Loading a motor from the bottom SUCKS.
I have loaded from the top and it's MUCH faster and easier.
Top loading
Remove hood.
Move hoist into place.
Lower motor in.
Easy to adjust to line up mount holes.
Done.
Bottom loading
Dangerously jack up car rediculously high. Just getting it up that high is going to take some time. My scenario - jack up car, put it on jack stands, jack up car, put it on jack stands, jack up car, put it on jack stands, jack up car, and put it on jack stands. 4 TIMES! Jacking the chassis up with one wheel one the ground and one front side up on a jackstand was NOT cool. You have to do that to get the front end WAY up so the entire motor can fit under it.
Remove all under body plastic.
Remove front crossmember and radius rods.
Roll engine under car.
Lower chassis down - oh yeah - reverse dangerous jacking.
Figure out how high the car has to be in relation to the motor so you can bolt the mounts in.
Bolting the mounts in wsn't that hard. I think I got lucky. I can see how that could go very wrong very quick.
I hate loading from the bottom.
Uhaul SUCKS because they don't rent engine hoists anymore.
It's all Uhauls fault.

Same here
If you're doing it at home w/ no access to a lift then it's a bitch and a half to do it from the bottom, BUT we did it at a shop with a lift and it was MUCH easier.
I prefer from the top witha cherry picker at home with Pizza or chicken and beer

LOL...
i like going from the bottom. you don't need to put the car up that high...just tip the motor and pull it in then prop it up grab your picker pick it up and your set.

Nope.
I'm still mad at it.
I ended up completely trashing the lower Cusco bar while I was in there.
NOTE TO BOTTOM LOADERS WITH THE LOWER BAR- don't lower your chassis onto board and blocks and crap if you have the Cusco bar. Remove the bar and don't be lazy. I know... it's not fun putting that bar back in, but pull it out anyway. No matter how lucky you think you are, something will mess up and your bar will end up in the trash.

I had the same sucess when loading the motor from the bottom. The bolts slide in super easy since I had much more control of the chassis with a jack than I do of an engine on a hoist.

I ended up raising the car up and setting it on blocks.
Then I removed the rolling cart I had under the engine and rested the engine on some blocks.
The engine side mount sat in it's pocket, but without a bolt.
I jacked the tranny into location and got the mount in.
Then I jacked up under the engine and put the engine mount in.
Jacking up the chassis didn't work for me. I couldn't get it that way.

jackin gthe car up by the rear tow hook, and front subframe is not recommended, but not too bad if you don't do it too often. That would've made your life waaay easier.

Can't jack up from the front "subframe". You have to remove the front crossmember to load from the bottom. All that's left up front is the radiator support and it's not strong enough to hold the chassis up. Besides, the front of the car was up so high that I would have had to have put many blocks of wood between the car and the jack to get it up that high.

Re: (4drEF)
If you dont have access to a cherry picker you can get 6 of your friends, a strong pole and some chain and have it in there easy.. You need to take your hood off to do it but it works.. Just put 3 people on each side and lift the motor into the car and 1 person to swing it into place and put the motor mount bolts in..
And we did this with a prelude motor so a civic motor should be even eaiser..

If I had cherry picker, WHY would I want to do all the extra work just preparing to load it from the bottom? Drop that engine in from the top = EASY in comparison!!!!

I had the engine on this "holder" I built and was able to get everything pretty much lined up right.

That's a sweet engine cart holder thing.
See, if you would have posted that a week ago... hahaha!
Actually, I had it on a roll-around cart.
Basically a flat board with casters on the bottom. It rolled right under the car no problem.
I didn't have much luck jacking the car up and down to line up the mount holes.

Hmmm... maybe I'll try building one in a few weeks when I get the engine running.
I assembled the motor myself (first time) so it probably won't last more than 10 minutes!

lol doing it from the bottom is so easy when you have a lift i also do it from the bottom with a jack and 2 jackstands, just jack it on the steering rack on the right side and i do it alllllllllll the time!! its easy i HATE doing it from the top; i guess im just one of those guys who likes the bottom

Re: (5litereater)
You're making your life too hard.
1.Make a holder or short stand out of wood and those teflon furniture sliders(work like casters, lots cheaper). If you swap other motors a lot, weld one together(with casters).
2. Use a cherry picker and hoist up the front of your car REALLY high.
3. slide the motor under the car and lower it back down.
This guy I know made a jig for his ATV/ Motorcycle jack and he said it works really well. Now he can move the motor up as well.

Re: (Bishop4G)
I have done it both way,s both by myself, they are about the same.
Tips for loading from bottome:
Put a couple spare tires on the back
use a big (tall) jack under chassis
slide engine on 1/2" plywood
lift engine with a pair of hydraulic floor jacks
i put an engine (d16) in for the 1st time ever, bottom loading in ~45 minutes. I put a B16 in top loading (1st b-series swap ever) in 30 minutes. This excludes hooking **** up.

Re: (krustindumm)
wanna borrow my hoist?
by the way, removing/installing the engine from the bottom is 800 times easier if you have a lift (which is the only SANE way to install an engine from the bottom).
