HowTo: Install 88-89 EDM MPH cluster in 88-89 CRX/Civic

Hello honda-tech https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif Heres the directions on how to install that elusive 88-89 EDM MPH gauge cluster into an 88-89 EF

Rev. 0.2

[INTRO]
I wanted to install the 150mph EDM cluster for the 88-89, but I could not find information on this anywhere!
All the howto's were for the clusters in km/h or for the 90-91.

So heres the howto.
This task was accomplished by tracing the pcb layout on the original cluster, and matching to the pins on the new cluster.

[NO WIRE CUTTING REQUIRED https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif ]
Assuming that everyone is familiar with removing their gauge cluster; All I'm going to give is the correct pin-outs.
You can de-pin the plugs with a micro flat blade screwdriver through insertion in the front of the plug where attachment to the cluster is established and gently prying up the plastic clip inside of the plug.

(blurry pics at bottom) -- OUTDATED DO NOT USE AS REFERENCE

These pin-outs are left to right with the tab facing up from the side the wires enter the plug from the vehicle

[TO GET FULL BRIGHTNESS ON YOUR GAUGE CLUSTER] -- THIS PART IS IMPORTANT...
1. de-pin your dimmer switch
2. cross red/black wires together
(you can slide them into each other and wrap them with electrical tape no cutting required)

NOTES: There is no dimmer on the EDM clusters, if someone knows how to implement this function please post a reply. Your dimmer will not function with this cluster.

WARNINGS:
1. If you do NOT do this your gauge cluster will not be fully illuminated.
2. If you adjust your dimmer switch without making this modification the cluster WILL go crazy if the brightness is turned down. All lights will illuminate and the gauges will go to 100%. This probably isnt healthy for it.

Has anyone tried this yet? I want to buy a ukdm cluster but I want to make sure it will work before I buy it.

I used the tachometer and speedometer from a UKDM cluster and installed them into a USDM cluster, just a matter of unscrewing from the bhttps://honda-tech.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=43293&stc=1&d=12437831 85ackside.

you never have to do any wiring. dont know why people still do it that way. ive been saying this for YEARS.

True, just swap into the usdm housing. Very easy.

Here is my problem. The reason I want to swap over my cluster is because My 88 Si cluster is burnt up on the back side so I dont have any cluster lights. I may buy both and just swap over everything from the ukdm cluster to a other Si cluster. What would you guys think? Here is my picture of the cluster

Swapping the housings will not work for the 88-89.

I already attempted this. The housing internals are completely different.

This may not be the case for the 90-91 cluster.

I dont know, I dont have one.

This writeup is for an 88-89 HF cluster to an 88-89 UKDM cluster

Please be aware of that

why will it not work? post a pic of what your working with. because you might be trying to put a 90-91 cluster in a 88-89.

Hello, i hate re bumping a thread so old and i do apologize.

im having an issue with the wiring, i`ve been able to rewire almost everything, only missing the seat belt reminder, and the vss, (CEL code thrown).

the issue being that the pin outs seen in the internet doesnt match, what i have, been doing trial and error, but at 1 point, smoke came from cluster, so i suppose cable was in a real wrong position, does any one has the correct pics with the repining done,

i have the pics of the connector before repining them.

hope to have some help thanks.
