How-to Crx Hood Prop Rod Mod
Hi guys. I mocked this up the other day...it's fully installed now, functional, and easy to make. It uses one stock lift support for the rear hatch, so you can always get a replacement part. You will need to make a small plate/bracket, and have some close-sized bolts and nuts. I just had some honda hardware lying around. When you're done, it will be similar to this:
Ok here's how i did it:
-first remove the stock hood prop...it just wiggles out of the grommet.
-then make a bracket that mounts above the frame...anything will work here, you could use a larger bolt where the grommet is, or drill your own hole and use a honda bolt, which is what i did. I drilled and tapped the frame. there is also an access hole on the other side of the frame, under the fender. i don't have a pic, but you can sneak a nut and socket in there.
note the orientation of the strut in the bracket:
-here you can see where my nut rests on the frame (extra support)
the spot i used is approximately 1-1/2" from the firewall. I also used honda hardware and 2 old valve cover washers.
i'm not sure if this is necessary, but here you can see where i scraped off some body sealer for extra clearance:
I also laid a piece of pipe here (cheater bar) and hammered a little, to clear where the strut will rest. it may not be necessary, but i did this on an earlier attempt.
lastly, your hood mount. you will need to drill a hole approximately 12" from the leading edge of the hood. you can use factory holes for reference:
you just need to sneak a nut on the backside...you will have to notch or enlarge the factory hole.
i will finish the area with some epoxy and paint, but for now i have painter's tape on it.

Pretty cool, if you didn't have to tear up that hole in order to get a nut on the back, nothing a little bondo or whatnot couldnt fix though. much better than buying the Js racing kit for 130bucks haha.

Not diggin it personally. possibly a good concept, but definitely needs room for refinement.
and as far as this comment goes, if you need to use bondo to fix something that bad, yeah, i'd rather spend the $130 to get the one that doesn't require making my car look all blah.

or use one from a newer accord, it might look better. Or we could all just take the 3 seconds to put the normal hoodprop up?

i realize it looks rough...but it was my 3rd attempt from scratch. i plan to clean it up and do some very minor body work. when i'm done it will be stock-looking. my hood came with body work and 7 layers of paint, so i'm not worried about it.
i like your mod as well, but where do i get the saab brackets? what size struts? and does it really need 2?

The white car looks sick with it's mod job. The original one with the hatch strut looks like **** and I couldn't be paid to do that to my car. But, it's not mine and as long as the OP is happy and it works for him that's all that matters. I do appreciate the fact he took time to post to help others who might use his method even if it is pretty ghetto.

Do you have a how to? And show us how it's done. I like 2 better so there is no hood flex
