Default Fuel gauge not working

Hey guys, I have an 89 civic and the fuel guage stopped working, I was wondering if I purchase an external fuel gauge (Auto Meter, Ext...) how would I go about wiring it up? Do I use the wire from behind my cluster? The gauge I want is an "Auto Meter Z-Series" It says it's short sweep/ electric. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Guys..

first you have to determine whether it's the gauge or the sender.
replacing the gauge does nothing if the sender is at fault.
to do this, disconnect the sender harness and ground it. if the gauge reads full, the sender is at fault

Thanks for the reply, But I ordered a set of reverse glow gauges installed themand everything work great. I decided to "paint my needles," which was stupid because it weighed the needles down. so i scraped off the paint and all the needles work except for the fuel one. first it dropped real fast well past the E. so i moved it around a bit and now it doesnt work. Before I painted them the fuel worked good. I'm just so confused.. and if it is the sending unit, ive looked online for one and couldnt find one for my civic. Thanks again for responding.

oh. ok. you probably damaged it while cleaning then. or it got thrown out of calibration. try putting 12v and ground to the gauge. if it doesn't move, i would just replace it
