Default Quick advise on rebuilding my B16 Block

Before dropping my engine and separating the cylinder head, I just wanted some advice on what to replace and not.

I had my cylinder head machined less than 8K miles on my 1st Gen B16 CRX so I won't be doing anything to the cylinder head.

The condition on my stock B16 is fine other than the puff of smoke when I press on gas (from dead start). I barely pass smog last summer and have 1 year left, so I was planning to work on it during this fall/winter.

So far, I had my water pump and the timing tensioner replaced at the same time when I had my cylinder head machined (replace valve stem and lost motion assembly).

Basically, I'm planning to replace the following parts for my block:

-Piston Ring
-Main seal/crank seal
-oil pan gasket
-New head gasket

I guess it really depends on what the machine shop will tell me on the condition on the crank shaft but is it necessary to replace the rod bearing, rod, piston, oil pump, oil pick up and other parts?

Any info would be appreciated.

Really it would depend on whether or not the wear/tear items are within spec. You'd have to wait until it's all apart to inspect and measure everything before you can reasonably decide to replace those major components on top of the typical rings/bearings. Also, you'd have to decide on whether or not you'll be using OEM crank bearings because they'd be individually sized as opposed to say King bearings which are sold as a set of one size fits all.

Thank you for your advice CJ. I'm planning to drop the motor after speaking with the machine shop.

I would replace bearings, all seals and gaskets.

trying to nickel and dime your way out of engine rebuild will likely lead to poor performance & longevity.

while the engine is apart, replace bearings, seals, block orfice orings, water tube orings, oil pump, pick up gasket, oil pump oring, so on.

I was going to take it to Noel at Quality Auto Machine in Kearny Mesa. He rebuilt my cylinder head and did an awesome job.

I had a friend who took it to Hopsing's Machine but his Type R head didn't come out anything close to my B16. Sad that he paid more too...

I thought Hopsing's was a good spot to go to. Oh well, post back when you make some progress!

PS
FWIW the only other spots I've used is Wholesale Automotive Machine on Mission Gorge and Cylinder Head service off Sports Arena. I do assembly at home.
