Lo-Buck EF

so, i changed my rear shoes and now my pedal travel is excessive and the handbrake is useless. i blead everything and checked to be sure everything is connected correctly (springs and such) and all is well.
i have a bent adjuste which i think may be the culprate.
any ideas?

The rear brake adjuster is broken you mean? Did you adjust your brakes after you replaced them?

Did you adjust the shoes manually after getting them in there?

I pull the handbrake 2 clicks and then adjust the shoes manually until the drum drags. Then I button it all up and let the automatic adjuster do it's thing.

I think the auto adjuster works by pressing and releasing the brake pedal.
Some people say driving in reverese and hitting the brakes is the way to do it, but I think that's an old school domestic V-8 kinda' thing that grandpa's talk about.

when you said to drive and brake in reverse is that how you tighten your e-brake?

its bent. so i dont think it automatically adjusts. i did adjust everything before i put everything together. then i had to adjust the handbrake up a bit to get it to work, but it still doesnt hold the car

No.

That's how old cars used to adjust their drum brakes.
I've never had any luck doing that in my Honda.
I inspected the workings of the auto adjuster and it seems to adjust when you press on the brake pedal.

Once the brake pedal is adjusted and your car stops properly when you are driving then you could adjust your hand brake. It has it's own hardware of nuts and bolts to deal with.

i think its under the boot and plastic. there will be to springloaded things...im not sure at all. i could look in my honda man. but im lazy

look behind your handbrake handle. theres a little rectangular plastic access pannel. pop it out and adjust the e-brake by tightning/loosening the center nut. i think its 10 or 12mm

i think i have the probem figured out. i think its a combination of the bad adjuster (a bent adjuster wont turn to adjust) and drums with a nasty lip on them. the lip means the shoes arent getting adjusted as tight as they should be beacuse they need to clear the lip. im gonna change the drum and the bad adjuster this week and see what happens.

bent adjuster changed, rear brakes re-adjusted. problem fixed

the best way to adjust your handbrake hatchinprogress is to loosten it all the way with the drums off, adjust the drums via the adjusters. then make final adjustments at the handle. but you can just tighten the 12mm at the handle.
