Default d16a1 starter! please help

the d16a1 swap into my 90 hf is complete (: it runs perfect... but only after push starting it ha
the starter will not engage. i can hear it spinning, but it doesnt reach the flywheel.
is there a different starter i can use? has anyone else ran into this problem?
this is happening with the original si tranny starter. can i use the d16a1 starter to solve the problem? i also heard of using an automatic starter.
someone please help me figure this out! thank you.

also gonna be switching oil pans, can i use any d series oil pan without any trouble? i know i could use the d16a6 but i've had no luck finding one and im wondering which other i could use.

The D16a1 will NOT bolt into the 90HF chassis. So this means that you have custom made mounts, or you don't have a D16a1, or you have somehow put together a set of miss matched parts and can't understand why nobody will help you.

What # is stamped on the motor?
What transmission are you using?
What flywheel are you using?

you can use any D16 oil pan but you will need to use the matching oil pump pickup - you will need to modify the main bearing girdle in order to bolt the pickup on - this is the D16A6 pickup on the D16A1 (the D16A1 pickup mounts are the empty ones to the left on the girdle):

are you using both of the starter attaching bolts? the one that goes thru the transmission clutch housing doesn't have anywhere to bolt into the D16A1 block - you need to drill and tap the hole in the transmission clutch housing to get the second bolt installed

I have done this before and had the same problem. The starter shaft is not engaging far enough . Its hitting the block. You have to remove the trans. After that you will see where the water neck is on the back. Just below it on the block there is a half round shape kinda protruding into where the flywheel is. Its got to be ground out so the starter can fully engage.
