Icon6 CRX Quarter Window Installation

So I read up and learned how difficult the quarter windows are to install on the '88-'91 CRX. I wasn't thrilled to hear that since I had concern about breaking the glass, but I really wanted to take this as an opportunity to learn something new.

It wasn't nearly as difficult as described.

Pics are linked since I'm posting from a phone. This might also improve load time on shitty connections.

SUPPLIES
Replacement glass
Seal with clip
Front garnish clips (x3) (91509-SH2-003)
Front garnish
Window Weld (08609)
Flat razor(s)
Pocket knife
Alcohol
Cloth
Caulk gun
Suction cups

*Make sure your window weld is not expired. You will want a way to heat the window weld to make it easier to work with. Even warm, it might still act like you're trying to caulk with roofing tar.

I was quoted $218 for this repair through insurance, $175 for the glass elsewhere, $42 for the seal from Honda and $25 for the window weld. All prices are before tax and your location and suppliers may cause prices to vary.

Make sure all of the old glass and seal is removed from the vehicle. Remove the front garnish as well.

More than likely you will damage or otherwise break the rear clip in order to remove it.

To remove the front clips, lean them forward gently until you hear/feel them click. Then use a knife or similar thin instrument to press the other side of the clip on the front side. If you press it right the clip should easily pop out.

Once you've removed it all it should look like this.

If you're using a salvage piece of glass, make sure you remove all the original sealant.

Here's how the front garnish clips attach.

Install the front garnish and then the seal onto the glass. To make the seal line up there should be a small line on the backside which matches to a clear spot on the bottom rear of the glass.

Now is a good time to test that everything lines up to the car. Don't snap it into place yet though.

Wipe down the mounting areas on the car and around the glass with alcohol.

In case you're wondering, you should be able to use the 3M window weld with a standard caulking gun. This is what's under that pull tab.

Before you attempt to use the window weld, it might make things go better if you heat it up first. I've heard of using a heat gun, but I just sat it in front of a heat vent while I worked. You might not want to leave it entirely unsupervised.

Apply the window weld to the glass. Go all the way around leaving no open spots. Take into consideration what will be covered from the inside when the glass is installed.

Open the door to the car. Carefully line up the clips to the holes. Press the window assembly into place. Window suction cups might help with this. You should hear the clips all snap into place as you press each one. Follow around the entire piece of glass to make sure the window is firmly in place.

The manual suggests you don't close the doors or hatch until the sealant is set. I held the glass firmly to the body while the door was shut. I read that this window weld might set in as little as 30 minutes. (Dish detergent cleaned it off hands btw.)

Do not drive the car for at least 4 hours after the window installation. If it must be moved, drive the vehicle slowly.
