One quick way to tell, HF only has 1 side mirror on the drivers side.

Unless they have been replaced, the triangular pieces of glass in the rear will say si, or hf on those models, the dx's aren't marked.
Of course the other things listed would probably be a more accurate way of telling.

si=sunroof
dx=DPFI
hf=no drivers side mirror
these are easy dead give aways!

1991 HF would be:
JHM ED836
Si:
JHM ED936
std 5-speed:
JHM ED835
The other years probably have the same codes as well, but am not sure.
Otherwise a good way to tell if it's an HF is the lack of the rear-wiper. Some people add the passenger side mirror on their HF's, it's an easy addition.

Im not sure if this will help you but I found out that my 90 CRX was HF because it had "HGM FI" on the engine....high gas mileage blah blah....

Re: crx ? hf? dx? si? how can you tell (VTECHatch)
Somtimes its hard to tell though, becuase like in my case, my REX(DX) was totalled in 95 and has been salvadge since, but when it was rebuilt, a sun roof was installed, different fenders.....(not sure on those yet) and a new motor. Im not sure about the fenders because I got some clear corners from a friend who had a wrecked 90 si and his screwed into the fender and mine clip in???? WTF anyone elses do that??
I have a sunroof though, awesome A/C, and alot of other accesories from a SI. What makes me mad is my odometer readins says 189,000 miles...but on the timing cover it says 11-5-97 which either means the last time the belt was changed..YIKES....or it was a swap which I think it was, you wouldnt believe how strong the motor is for a 200k miles.
I dont know its weird, my whole car is a mystery after it was totalled in 95 it was really never registered...It was fixed until some lady bought it in 97 and after that it is blank, this is form carfax too, until now I have it its listed as prior salvadge, the thign was rusty as hell, but you wouldnt know ive pretty much done all the body work with my friend in the last 3 weeks and hope to get it painted in a month or 2. Ill get some pics up soon of before and after I have a ton.

My HF doesn't have "HGM-FI" on the engine. It does however have "PGM-FI" on the intake manifold. All that means is that it has sequential port fuel injection. The Si has the same moniker. If the car has the original engine the HF is easily recognized by the wimpy intake manifold with narrow runners and a narrow intake.
Everything you need to know about the car's origins is on the VIN number. Trust me on this one.
