Has anyone ever had problems getting the crank pulley bolt off? I can't get that damn thing off. I borrowed my friend portable air compressor and using a freakin air impact wrench on it and it still willn't come off. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm just going to try and use a 1/2 drive socket wrench and a long-long breaker bar.

Is your motor in or out of the car? Because I dont know how in the heck you'd do it if it's stil in the car. When I did mine, the ZC was out of the car...air gun was of no help. what we did was jam a long crowbar in the flyweel (with the tranny off of course) and braced it on a partially threaded tranny bolt. Then we took a 1/2 drive wth a 3 foot breaker bar and just gave it hell. It came off after a little while. Hope that helps.

Use a breaker bar with a pipe over the end for more leverage. Put the car in 5th gear and have someone step on the brake.

a huge breaker bar like 7ft of steel just hope you dont strip it. Try with the air tools some more before you do option 2.

use shop torches not a propane one to heat the bolt not to hot and hit it with a impact gun this is the only way it will work trust me i have broken tings dring to pry it

I had this problem about two months ago. I tried a big breaker bar with a four foot pipe......and bent the pipe. Tried the blow torch....nothing. Tried penetrating fluid...still nothing. Used a Craftsman 450 lb/ft impact gun...lots of noise, but no budging. I decided to give up $200 to buy a bigger Craftsman 600 ft/lb impact gun, and only bought myself a thinner wallet.

If you tried all this, what would you do? I gave up and towed the Crx to the Honda dealership. Fortunately a friend of mine is friends with one of the guys at the dealership. He told me to turn my wheel all the way to the left, then stuck his Ingersal-Rand impact wrench into my wheel well and handed me my crank pulley bolt about two seconds later.

As far as I'm concerned, the only way to do it is with a quality impact gun.

you can also fill the end that the hose goes onto...You fill the little hole up with motor oil til it spills out like a champ...if the impact is around 120psi...it will come off. Take the high air pressure and adds the oil pressure too. Makes for one pissed off impact gun. Had to do it today even.

I just had the same problem until last week. I used a breaker bar ( no go), broke the bar returned it got a bigger bar and broke, rented an impact wrench( no go) finally pushed the car to Mobile and had it taken out there for a small fee! don't waste your time trying to do that yourself.

Breaker bar(or socket wrench) Make sure you have good tools or theyll break..

A long extension, jackstand and a pipe about 5 feet long...

hook up your tools without the pipe...place the end nearest the breaker bar or socket wrench and support it with the jackstand... slide your pipe over it and go at it...IF YOU ARE USING GOOD TOOLS NOTHING WILL BREAK(dont use the 99 cent socket wrench)

make sure to stick something in the crank pulley to keep it from spinning...Be creative...

IT WILL COME OFF!!! SOAK IT IN WD40 or other same type things...etc etc..

Hasn't anyone tried using the crank pulley tool that Moroso makes? Any opinions on it? Just curious.

5th gear, 2 foot snap on breaker bar, large pipe atleast 3 feet long. i used the extension pipe from my 4 ton craftsman jack. then jam something like a screwdriver in one of the crank pully holes so it locks it when it turns and hits the fenderwell (inner)(w/screwdriver). that was a bitch but it finally broke loose. when it did i thought i broke something.

Yea, seriously! It's tough stuff. When I broke my tranny open I don't think you'd even need the studs in there that suff is so strong.

i have a power gun cost me 240 bucks puts out 220 pounds of torque, i only use it to snap **** loose, never to put anything back on...

your car... that bolt required 120 pounds of torque, the impact wrenches on the market usually only have like 60-100 pounds of torque, and most impact guns that come with air compressors are even too ***** to break loose bolts holding wheels on.

so your if you already havent going to have to put the engine back together, take it to a local shop and have them pop your ****. make suer its tight enough not to fall off your car, and then drive home and take the **** off.

if you try and take it off without an inpact gun having someone step on the brakes and putting the car in gear while someone tries to break it loose with a breaker bars you will **** up your transmission by bending syncros... so ohpefully you didnt try and do that, luckily my breaker bar snapped before i did any damage haha.

Screw the moroso crank pulley tool. Go to a hardware store and find a slotted piece of metal. Make sure it's kinda think. I looked around in my garage and found something. It was about 2-2.5" long, 1/16" thick, and had slots on both ends. Just bolt one of the slots to the flywheel, and one to the tranny casing. I used a 3/8" drive craftsmen wrench, with the 3' handle from my jack on the end of it. Works like a charm every time.

The moroso tool will not work on a d16a6 flywheel. I am in the process of swapping a 98 y8 sohc vtec motor into my 91 crx si, and i needed the drivers side motormount bracket for the y8. The moroso tool works with crank pulleys that have a hexagonal shape hole in the middle of it. It works on newer 1.6l and 1.8l honda's/acuras and cost like 80 bucks.


Well i have pics that show you how to do it on the resource.crx.org technical section, but the server is not responding.

For the d16a6, take two bolts and stagger them in the holes on the crank pulley. Wedge a crowbar between the two bolts and the top of the crowbar against the upper motor mount. Then stick the socket/prybar on it with a long pipe and have at it. (I know it sounds confusing, I will try to get the pics up asap.) Hope this helps.

Here is a pic of how I got the d16a6 crank pulley off. I tried an impact, a torch, and bent a craftsman wrench wedging the flywheel in the tranny to prevent the motor from turning over.

wow...when i did mines, we broke 3 ratchets, and 8 17 mm sockets...whoops. good thing they were all "lifetime" warrantied...hahaha. we got it off eventually though--i had to use a pipe and hammer that sucker loose. surprisingly it came off after those aformentioned pieces we broke....

PB Blaster and let it soak in for 1/2 hour, repeat.
Now hit the crank bolt with a 2 lb mini sledge 3-4 times. This breaks loose the corrosion from the Cadium plating. Now use a standard 1/2 impact gun.
B16's from JDM that have been sitting are a real bear to get loose.

i had to torch mine on my old D16A to get bolt off,,the balancer didnt like that,it split apart after like 500 miles after reinstalling it...so if you torch it,its probably a good idea not to reuse the old balancer
