Default Weird Noise 🤔 Need help figuring it out

Well, my ‘90 EF Hatch has developed a rather odd noise. Imagine it as an almost Rod-Knock sound, but not rod knock and quieter. At idle in neutral it does it at what sounds like the same speed as the engine is idling, and also does it when the car is slowly rolling in neutral, it might do it when it’s rolling and going quickly in neutral but I just can’t hear it. My best guess is a throw out bearing, but I wanted more opinions. Just happened randomly one day when I turned on the car. Swapping motor to B18b1 very soon, so I’m not super worried, but is my daily until I find a cheap beater to get me through the swap. So any help is appreciated. D15b1 with the 5spd. DX model.

Sounds like the throwout bearing to me, as the last poster asked, does it go away with the clutch pressed in? If so it's more than likely that. I've driven vehicles with chattering throwout bearings for a while before they actually went out completely. Not recommended lol

Yep, goes away when clutch is pressed in. :/ well I hope it doesn’t lock up on me and strand me somewhere, I guess.

If the noise goes away when the pedal is depressed, it's likely the input shaft bearing inside the transmission and not the throwout bearing.

DaX, if that were the case, how imminent is it that my car will **** out on me at any moment..?

I've had one grenade on me before and it took out the input shaft seal (and part of the case :/), so it dumped most of the oil out of the transmission in less than a day. But you'd know it if this happened - it was really loud. I've had other transmissions that roared a little and I drove them for somewhere between 8-12 months before I took the transmission out and replaced the bearings. I personally wouldn't wait a terribly long time to get it fixed.

As I said, I’m just gonna roll with it until it blows. Because I’m putting a new motor/trans in anyways. But I was just seeing how long it’d last and what the noise might be, thanks for the help though guys. Always appreciated.

Mine is doing this, it goes with rpm (more at 3rd or 4th gear low rpm) but doesn’t do it at idle just did clutch and flywheel bearing after it started. It only helped it. I’m pretty sure it’s the input shaft bearing inside the trans,
I’m gonna go B soon as well so not worried too much about it.

if it's making a knocking sound it's probably close to seizing up

normally they just make a roaring sound for a long time
